Yes, it's real.  It's called an Atlas moth, and it's indigenous to the Southeast Asian forests. It's one of the largest moths in the world, but there's an even bigger moth that can be found in Australia, called the Hercules moth.
You have a lot of weird creepy-crawlies down in Australia, Deb.  One of my favourites has to be a moth that's nicknamed the Mad Hatterpillar. As a caterpillar it keeps its old moulted heads on top of its new one like a hat.
