What was with the talk about how the character was influenced by Heath Ledger’s Joker? Michael B. Jordan and I believe some other people involved with the film have said that the character took some influence from Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker. I just don’t see it though.

It's just assholes with blogs over hyping it.
MBJ was good in the film, but his performance was no Heath Ledger.

You’re thinking too literally. I think Jordan used Ledger’s intensity and menace as a source of loose inspiration for Erik. There are very few circumstances under which the performance of a psychotic, drifter dressed as a clown could literally inform another performance.
