Unfortunately, they're right. Further proving that what's fashionable and what's good are two separate things.

If I cared about fashion, I wouldn't look like this:

The Washington Post had an article on that phenomenon last summer. As for me, I've bought 9 or 10 guitars in the last few years. The most recent, an Orville Les Paul, is proudly displayed as my avatar.

Gibson has been in fiscal straits for a few years now, as indicated by falling bond ratings. The company has tried to respond by cutting costs but quality control has suffered. Craigslist and eBay have a lot of 2015-17 Gibsons going for less than comparable ones from the prior years.

Hip-Hop/R&B have monopolized Top40 music and the culture. There is no more genre diversity.

It looks like that article can be summed up in this excerpt: My response is, I don't care! I don't care about popularity, I don't care about fashion, and I don't care about singles. I care about quality albums. And there were plenty of great, guitar driven, albums from last year, as illustrated by my 2017 Rock/Metal Album Releases thread.

Guitar sales are down but pedal sales have been up for a while now. Seems most new guitarists are more interested in using their guitar like an effects board than playing traditional blues, rock, country and metal. It could also be that more and more are buying used. Gibson and Fender's pricing has skyrocketed in recent years. When I bought my first Les Paul Custom 16 years ago they listed for about $2600 new, and now they list for over $4300, and I don't know why anyone would pay that when you could get a superior hand-made replica for half from any number of luthiers.

I don't know why anyone would pay that when you could get a superior hand-made replica for half from any number of luthiers. Any recommendations? For a Les Paul? Heritage H-150/H-157 or Carvin/Kiesel CS6. Latter can be completely customized and will run from about $1800-$3000 depending on options (exotic wood choices are where most of the expense is). Former was founded by former Gibson luthiers who stayed behind at their factory in Kalamazoo when Gibson moved. FWIW, Gibson does have (and enforces) a design patent on their guitars so these aren't exact replicas, but I dare you to tell the difference without seeing them side-by-side. Carvin's are smaller/thinner though, which many prefer since traditional LPs are tree trunks that often weigh ~10lbs. Heritages are closer to a traditional LP.

Thanks. Any thoughts on Edwards copies of Gibson guitars?

Thanks. Any thoughts on Edwards copies of Gibson guitars? I've heard they're very good but haven't played one. Nor have I. Edwards guitars seem to be good buys. They look good and at least some have Seymour Duncan pickups. If bought from Japan, they might incur a customs fee, but even with that they're about $1100 – well below a Gibson Les Paul Classic or Standard. Getting back to Gibson and its financial woes (which the company denies, by the way), I'm afraid Gibson will shift at least some manufacturing to Korea or China. Fender already has a two-tier system of Mexican- and US-made.
