The ThingIt is generally classified as a horror film. I would say it is also a science fiction movie. Which genre is correct? One of my all time favorite films. If you accept the horror genre designation I would say it is my favorite horror film.

Yes, it is both. You listed science fiction first and I tend to agree. Yes, BUT it also sounds phonetically better to say "Science-fiction horror" rather than "Horror science-fiction".

I'd say it's first and formost a suspense film. But it's also a excellent sci fi. On my top 3 favorite films of all time.

Perhaps an 80s version of old-timey 'weird fiction' as penned by Lovecraft or Wells? It was sometimes hard to differentiate their work as well.

It's both and probably some other genres too. Most movies cross multiple genres. I find the whole concept of genre to be less and less relevant as time goes on.

To me it will just always be " A John Carpenter Film " no matter what the film classification officially is .

Does it really matter what "genre" it is called ? By any name it is still just a "who cares what happens to the interchangeable and unrecognizable characters because we have not been introduced to them before they start getting blown up - blood bath- gore fest " that lacks the excitement and mystery and, dare I say, charm, of the far superior and true CLASSIC "The Thing from Another World" .

I had a Thing dream the other night. I was in a classroom and there were these leech like things growing in the corner and I wanted to get out of there.
I had another dream some time back where I was outside a hanger in a snowstorm and felt a thing was wandering around nearby.

The Thing from Another World (1951) That's another excellent classic film too - I agree BATouttaheck . Also well known Gunsmoke actor James Arness played " The Thing Creature" in this as well . I really like both films and sometimes watch these on the Halloween season back to back on DVD too ( IMPO - the best of both with these films ) . Thanks BATouttaheck for the reminder of the first film version too .

What genre is Pulp Fiction? www.dictionary.com/browse/genreThe word is most often used for literature and music. With films the word is used as a categorization. For easy reference at Amazon or at Blockbuster Video in the 80's and 90's. The Thing is a great movie.

The 1982 The Thing, horror, sci-fi atmosphere but basically it's a gruesome horror film. 1951 Thing From Another World, sci-fi, classic Fifties division, uses horror tropes but basically sci-fi. Scotty sells it ("keep watching the skies!"). Great film.

What is Science Ficton and what is Horror movies? Those borders is and should be unclear since it makes more interesting discussions...
Dracula movies offcourse have nothing to do with science.
But Frankenstein movies, isn't that a bit science fiction in waking up the dead with electricity?

But Frankenstein movies, isn't that a bit science fiction in waking up the dead with electricity? Exactly. And what about superhero movies? Are they a genre all their own? Maybe they are scifi or fantasy or action or comedy or action-comedy or family movies? Bruce Lee didn't believe in different styles of martial arts and I'm close to not believing in genres for movies anymore.

How many movies or Tv-Series does it take (did it take) that made superheroes their own genre, since I guess it evolved from science fiction, offcourse comic strips helped too.

Seems that currently the only significant "Genres" are BLOCKBUSTER and non-blockbuster.
