Anyone seen this? Trailer looks suspect, but then it's based on a lackluster and fairly incoherent novel.

Anyone seen this? Trailer looks suspect, but then it's based on a lackluster and fairly incoherent novel. Saw it in the 80's. I read a few of his books as a teen. The 'Rats' books weren't bad and 'The Fog'. Watch it out of curiosity and you never know going in with low expectations you might think it not so bad. I didn't like it and not planning on a re-watch.

A cheap and clunky supernatural film, but I liked it. If you thought the book was incoherent, the film’s approach is just as so.

Sorry, but I disagree with your opinion on the book. I thought it was a great story, had a creepy atmosphere about it, and there were some terrific scare parts. And the ending was a knock out! One of my favorite James Herbert books.
As for the movie, haven't seen it yet. I read a lot of negative things about it, including from Herbert himself. Even so, I'd still like to see for curiosity sake.

Didn't care for the movie but I'm overdue a rewatch.

I really liked the premise but not what was made of it. Despite 2.35 picture it feels like a clumsy, lazily edited TV production. Director David Hemmings wanted to make it more psychological than horror, which doesn't work at all since none of the characters are interesting and acting ranges from mediocre to poor. The script is really confused, mostly wandering from thriller to drama, with some supernatural scenes that feel like they were added only as an afterthought. 4/10 and even that is generous. I wish another adaptation would be made.
