Aliens which resemble giant mutated octopi say "Hello." by entangling their tentacles in the movie Monsters (2010).

Octopi

The OED lists octopuses, octopi, and octopodes all as acceptable plural forms. My Safari dictionary considers octopi incorrect, as - i is a Latin ending and octopus ultimately derives from Greek (in which the ending would be - podes)—but I disagree, as the word, while originally Greek, came into English via Latin. I’m with the OED on this one: I think octopi is a perfectly valid plural form—as is octopuses. Octopodes, however, is just plain ridiculous. More information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plural_form_of_words_ending_in_-us#OctopusThe Wikipedia article makes the point that octopus is itself Latinized Greek, which, as I said, renders octopi perfectly valid. I don’t see octopi or platypi as “misconceived” (as Fowler’s apparently writes) or “ill-considered” (as the Wikipedia article states). Some prescriptivists may give you hell for the - i plural, but this prescriptivist believes they’re wrong on the facts.

Salzmank That's all very well and good Mr. Built-In-Safari-Apple Dictionary, OED, but, IN MY VERY HUMBLE OPINION, octopus, like moose, is one of those words better left alone and therefor singular. That goes for platypus as well ! Now put THAT in your Funk and Wagnell's and smoke it !
