I’m surprised that there’s no thread for this yet. I saw the film a long while ago and thought it was overrated. I’m giving it a rewatch tonight and hope to have my mind changed for the better.

I didn't like it (funny thing though it was shown on cable exactly 1 day before the Oscars so I watched it and then next night it won best picture). Thought it was over the top and in bad taste. I didn't like the serial killer movie trend in the 90s, especially with the main character bonding with a a serial killer sage figure.
The theme of Silence of the Lambs irritated me-the idea that she needed to rescue the victims to silence a childhood trauma involving lambs and her father was just too heavy-handed. But making Lecter her surrogate father-mentor was really obnoxious.
I think Brian Cox was better as Hannibal Lecter, and Manhunter a better movie.

5/10 – some creepy moments but Hannibal Lecter seemed like a comic book villain. A safety pin and suddenly he's free, two guards are dead, and after putting up a grotesque display, he's walking the streets. Stupid.

Dang, the ratings are really split. I only saw half of it last night because it was really late and I had to get up early for school, but so far it’s a 7/10.

I like Moore and the second movie far better.
This "creepy" trans guys is boring, and her relation ship with Lecter...Foster is a cold fish and her acting has never impressed me.
The best part was his escape and onwards.

10/10. It was a great movie all-around, but the Hannibal Lector escape scene (where he dons the face) is one of the best scenes in horror movie history.

A very good thriller and I really like both Hopkins and Foster's performances.
And my personal feelings on Lambs vs Manhunter. I do like Manhunter and think it's a good film as well, but some aspects of it haven't aged well (using Iron Butterfly during a climactic battle?) and it drags in places. Lambs on the other hand, feels like it could have been released today.

This is an extremely well-crafted film. Top-notch acting by Foster and Hopkins, terrific directing and editing. The screenplay is written to keep cranking the suspense up to almost the final scene.
The problem I have with it is the same today on rewatching it as when I first viewed it long ago—the very negative messages about gender identity and sexual orientation that it conveyed. If it were possible to somehow defenestrate those messages, I'd probably give the film a 10. But since that's impossible, it's a generous 6.5/10 (which is higher than what I would have rated it in the past).

Never liked it. Hopkins didn't sell me on his threats/character. Predictable escape, running around like Shatner.
4/10

Have you seen the prequel Manhunter? I prefer it to SOTL. Manhunter is a much inferior film to SOTL. Manhunter basically could have been a made-for-tv film. SOTL is the full-on Hollywood experience. As someone else mentioned, Manhunter drags in a number of places. SOTL is suspenseful from the very beginning to the end.
