Yesterday I was on the RFS board, I clicked on a link posted by another user, my computer went to that news site and within seconds, I got a warning to not shut down my computer and call tech support, whose number was listed.
They told me that my computer had been hacked, and it was spyware, not a virus for which I pay ESET NOD32 for. It has taken hours and $300 paid to a tech support company to get my computer back. The representative urged me to use adblock so that this wouldn't happen again.
Now, when I log on here, I get a message from ProBoards to turn off my adblock. Sorry, but that isn't going to happen. If you want to charge me a monthly fee for using this board, I will consider if being on this board is worth the price, but I am not turning off my adblock program.

I have edited the thread title to reflect that the problem did not happen on this site, some other tech-savvy posters have walked me through a few things and, long story short, the computer is going in to the place where I bought for their tech support to check for any unwanted additions.
I will log off of this site in 25 minutes, then scan, then shut down and go to the Micro Center.
I won't be posting here until I get my computer back, so thanks to all who helped. As Arnold says, "I'll be back..."

In the future, do not call any tech support number or otherwise install software if you get a prompt saying you've been infected.
It is always a scam. If you gave them any credit/debit card number, I'm afraid you will need to cancel it.

Whatever anyone does when they get the asinine things is to remember they are asinine. You do not have a virus nor have you been hacked. The link they give you IS the virus/hack! CTRL, ALT, DELETE... Get to your end task, end the task that is whining about you being hacked/ virused. Never, ever call that retarded number.

Adding... I strongly suggest (and high five those who already are members) that you get your computers from a place where they can also service it "for free if you sign up for the protection plan". It is a God send and Geek Squad (best buy) has saved my computers on more than one occasion. Well worth it.

Yesterday I was on the RFS board, I clicked on a link posted by another user. Never click a link unless you're certain that the site it takes you to is legit. You can hover the cursor over the link and in the bottom left of your browser window it will give the link address - this is useful if someone used text in place of the link address.

As already mentioned. it's clearly some BS/scam. Agreed, naturally. the internet basically sucks without a decent ad blocker etc. In fact, outside of the usual ad-blockers everyone knows about, I use the MVPS HOSTS file on my router which helps filter out a decent chunk of the junk online at the router level so anyone connected to my router through a DHCP connection (basically automatic connection and you enter the password so you can access my WiFi) will get that filtering automatically since it simply won't allow connections to any of the 12,715 address listed in there currently and the router automatically updates the hosts file once a week. that MVPS HOSTS file is typically updated above once every month or two so my router basically just re-downloads the same file and applies it automatically once a week and once they release a newer version of it, which is above once every month or two, the router will automatically apply it within a week. but without doing that, you can always manually load the MVPS HOSTS file on your computer from time to time. deembastille I would save the cash personally. but then again I pretty much do all of my computer servicing stuff myself (I always build my computers etc). but some advice... outside of hardware failure, people can basically keep their computers in good running order by simply not installing a bunch of crap on their computers. like as a general guideline... unless you fully trust the program you install, don't install it. keeping to that general rule will keep people out of trouble and there computers in good running order. but come to think of it... if all one does is pretty much use their desktop computers to browse the internet and not much beyond this, simply switching to Linux (which is 100% free), from Windows, would basically make things a lot more idiot proof (no offense to anyone here) because Linux is immune to the junk online that effects Windows PC's since damn near everyone uses Windows that's by far the most targeted OS(operating system) on computers by shady people. something like this... linuxmint.com/ ; I was playing around with that on my older laptop (it's just a backup computer for me as my desktop runs newest version of Windows 10) a while ago and it was pretty good for a basic internet type of machine. but one reason I had to go back to Windows, which won't be a factor on a desktop, is battery life as Windows is noticeably better on battery life especially if you got a older laptop which does not get that good of battery life to begin with. but since you mentioned Geek Squad and recommended their protection plan etc... chances are that Linux stuff will seem like hieroglyphics in terms of getting it installed on your computer. but like I was saying, if you use programs that more or less require Windows then Linux won't be a option for you but if you just use your computer, especially desktop computer, for general internet then Linux Mint is a viable option as your chances of getting a virus on that is slim because it's immune to windows based viruses.

And, I have learned my lesson the hard way. I took my computer to a reputable company with licensed techs and they backed up my data, wiped my drive and re-installed my operating programs. And told me about control, alt, delete. I am poorer but wiser. Live and learn.

I was reading a thread on the sports board, I chose a poll answer and the next thing, a new window opens, there's a voice telling me my computer may be infected, etc. It had a red screen with some writing. I don't believe I clicked any link. I am not sure if my cursor moved to an ad and clicked it? Can't think how else this would happen?

I got the same thing after going to a link someone posted in the politics board. I gave it the three finger salute, closed the computer down, even pulled the plug and removed the battery. When I turned it back on, all functioned as normal. But I am not going to click on anymore links after this. I really dislike hearing that annoying voice and seeing the red screen.

Admin... Regarding the past couple of posts on this thread... Any insight as to what is going on? Should the OP of these polls be looked at?

Also: This website does not use audio ads, popups, or other annoyances."we do not sanction these types of ads. No matter what site/forum you visit on the internet this can happen if these ads make it into the rotation of the ad providers. We take violation of our ad criteria very seriously and do our best to eradicate them as soon as we are informed." - Scott, ProBoards Admin support.proboards.com/thread/579224/advertisements-over-audioPlease report ad violations by clicking "Report Ad" at the bottom of the page.
