This is being shown the next few weeks on Retro channel. I've never seen it... it sounds pretty daring for its time, as part of the plot apparently deals with a doctor performing illegal abortions.
Feel free to comment if you've seen it (and yes, I know how it ends: I peeked and read the full plot outline on Wikipedia).

I like it a lot but it's pretty obviously based on a stage play. Wiseman overacts outrageously but he's certainly entertaining.

Like OldAussie says, its stage roots are pretty obvious - and yes, Wiseman goes more than a wee bit over-the-top, but it's a terrific adult drama with fine performances by Eleanor Parker, a young Lee Grant and Kirk Douglas and sharp, skillful no-nonsense direction from William Wyler. Parker is particularly good here and one really feels for her character, but there are lovely sympathetic supporting turns from William Bendix and Cathy O'Donnell. So yeah, I obviously rate this one pretty highly and reckon it's a must-see. Bummer you couldn't resist peeping at details of the ending (one of the downsides of checking out the plot synopsis on Wikipedia), but don't miss it. .

jeffersoncody: I am so looking forward to seeing it. I'm surprised I've somehow managed to miss seeing it all these years.
I suspect that the old Barney Miller TV series from the 70s (which took place in a NYC police precinct) owes at least a fair amount of its concept to this film.

It certainly ranks among Kirk's greatest "Kirks".
