Just to reiterate, this is for people to post their review of Kong: Skull Island. Spoilers should be expected.
Just came back from the theater, and I thought it was great. DEFINITELY SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN!!!
High Points: As one review said, this was definitely a creature feature, and it does not disappoint. The CGI was great, and all the animals of Skull Island felt very really in looks, behavior, and expression. I especially loved the giant Water Buffalo. Reviews were also correct about John C. Reilly. He was really a stand out. The movie was also well paced. It hits the ground running with a peek of Kong first thing at the start of the film. There is a brief set up, and then about 20 minutes in they're at the island, and immediately encounter Kong. There isn't a lot of time wasted on pointless side stories or their set up. Some will probably disagree with me about this being a high point, because there really wasn't a lot of character development. I feel like the humans were just playing supporting roles in this, though. Kong and Skull Island were the stars here.
The Mediocre: I feel Samuel L. Jacksons character was a bit cartoonish. I'm not going to complain about the lack of character development, because like I said, I feel that would have been missing the point, but there really wasn't time to build a back story on him. That means trying to make him crazy didn't play out well. Instead of him being crazy, they should have just let him be wrong. I also felt the giant lizard might have been a little too hard to kill.
The Low: Tom Hiddleston's character (nothing against the actor or his performance) and his perfectly coiffed hair. First, his character was utterly pointless. He was supposed to be a master tracker, but anyone of the other characters could have done what he did throughout the film. This film had too many characters for a film that doesn't focus on character development to begin with, and his was a total waste. One reviewer mentioned his perfect highlights, so that was all I could see in his scenes. His hair also did not move the entire movie. Helicopter crashes, creature attacks, and a miles long trek through the jungle, and this guy looks like he stepped out of a Vidal Sassoon at all times. He was clearly there to be eye candy. Annoying. Is it a petty complaint? Yeah, but I still have it. It just annoyed me.
Overall, GREAT film, if you enjoy creature features and special effects. It plays out kind of like a comic book, but I think that's its strength
