Never fails to entertain.

Law and Disorder (1958). Amusing comedy with Michael Redgrave as a crook who pretends to be a missionary to explain his long absences to his son when he is actually in prison. Complications arise when his son decides to become a barrister. Joan Hickson very good as Redgrave's sister who brings up his son in his absence. Robert Morley as the judge who keeps sentencing Redgrave at intervals.

Carry On Cowboy (1965). Not one of my favourites, but always fun to watch.

Xanadu 1980, directed by Robert Greenwold Not a good movie at all, sadly it's a mess that struggles for a style, mixing the old-fashioned musicals with the craze at the time called roller-disco, and Greek Mythology. Not without interest though with a few nice references to old musicals. Gene Kelly plays a character named Danny McGuire, the same name his character had in Cover Girl 1944. It said to be based on the Rita Hayworth movie Down to Earth 1947. ![](https://themaindamie.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/xanadu_gene_kelly.jpg) Gene Kelly's screen farwell. ![](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMzhiNzkyYjItN2ZmYy00OTYyLThmZTUtMWQyYTZmZGIzOTAwXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTEwODg2MDY@._V1_.jpg) ![](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f9/ba/a2/f9baa26fef98d9d0e68951bff94394f0.jpg) ![](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDcxYjI0NDEtMjliOS00Y2VmLThjMjYtODZhNmI0MWIwMzBmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTEwODg2MDY@._V1_.jpg) Michael Beck who was hot after the violent The Warriors 1979 might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but he is incredibly stiff, except on roller skates. One never feels any spark between him and Olivia Newton-John. The movie flopped both commercially and critically, but the soundtrack album became a giant success. ![](https://www.laweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/xanadu-filming-locations-jared-cowan-1-759x500.jpg) ![](https://i.redd.it/1dc4sh0r1ck21.jpg) The Pan-Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles in it's hay-days, when that building was used in Xanadu it had decayed for many years and only the exteriors were used. The building was detroyed in a fire in 1989 and burned to the ground..

Michael Beck was good as the lead in Alcatraz the Whole Shocking Story.
The Cynic, the Rat and the Fist 1976 - John Saxon and Tomas Milian are rival crime lords being pitted against each other by a vengeful "bleached blonde" cop Maurizio Merli.
Hero's Island 1962 - James Mason, Rip Torn, Warren Oates --about a family of indentured workers who are granted ownership of an island but run into a gang that claims it is belongs to them. Violence results and when a mysterious stranger appears tied to a raft, they find a reluctant ally. More of a drama than an action film--the story reveals harsh living conditions for poor people in the 18th century.
Hercules vs the Moon Men 1964 - Alan Steel is not a peplum favorite but he has a lot to do here-fighting monsters, giant rock men, and aliens. Especially amusing moment when he empties a drinking cup so the evil queen doesn't see. Superhero movies should study these kinds of films--who wants to watch a strongman story where the hero sits around telling jokes or discussing his frailties? The only dead weight in the story is a ridiculous scene with a sandstorm that goes on forever. Otherwise, it's decent action man adventure for the budget.

Barefoot in the Park 1967, directed Gene Saks. Charming comedy based on a play by Neil Simon, that dares to be serious at times too. After the honeymoon life begins and being married is very quickly put to the test. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda were young and fresh at the time as the newlyweds. Mildred Natwick who plays Fonda's mother is the funniest character and has the funniest lines, and Charles Boyer is the newlyweds strange neighbour is old-fashioned charming gourmand with a bad stomach. The very small new apartment and the many stairs to climb to get there is nearly a character in itself is the cause for many laughs. ![](https://themotionpictures.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/2.png) ![](http://makingniceinthemidwest.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/24.jpg) ![](https://crystalkalyana.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/barefoot-in-the-park-1967-jane-fonda-charles-boyer-02-max.jpg) ![](https://www.filmkuratorium.de/filmk15-data/akten/screenshots/2015/barefoot-in-the-park-1967-robert-redford-jane-fonda-mildred-natwick-max.jpg) Both Robert Redford and Charles Boyer were both rather short men and it's interesting to see how they solves it so they won't appear shorter than Jane Fonda.

CASTLE KEEP 1969 -- I liked some of the philosophical discussions with Patrick O'Neil and Peter Falk's baking skills, and the castle was cool--imagine my surprise when I realized they blew it all to bits--so it had to be a set. What a set. But why make such a downer of a film? WHO is the audience? It cost $8 million to make and only grossed $1 million? Could the reason be because it is a downer?
This is why I say Hollywood must have had money to burn to blow it on such bad business decisions.

Sands of Iwo Jima 1949, directed by Alan Dwan. WW2 movie Made by the wanna-be-big movie company Republic Pictures, that sometimes made it right, as in this case. One has to bare in mind that this was once concidered a very realistic war movie and had the full support of every unit of any branch of the U.S. Military. It also used news-reels or else this movie would have costed a zillion. Story-wise it takes up more time on taking the Tarawa beachhead, than on the titles Iwo Jima. John Wayne, who is very good, both tough and human, leading a bunch of, in the beginning, misfits into hell, and young actors that never amounted to anything like John Agar, and some that had a long career like Forrest Tucker. ![](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/upb2343U23pPcEFcHAzX1SXfEHf.jpg) ![](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDdkZDc1NmMtNTU3MS00OTczLTg4NGItOWZkOWM1OTAzOTU1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDYzNTI2ODc@._V1_.jpg) ' ![](https://images.justwatch.com/backdrop/8672617/s1440/sands-of-iwo-jima) Having the real persons who actually raised the flag on Iwo Jima, unlike a once famous press photo, recreating it again, including native American Ira Hayes, gives this movie a great end. OK it might be a bit flagwaving! so what, concidering how many who gave their lives!

KING OF KINGS 1961 - This is the worst of the Samuel Bronston films I have seen--it's pretty dull with a tacked on Barabbas rebellion sub-plot. I am sorry to say this but: Jesus is boring. Having him as a periphery character worked great in BEN-HUR but less is more. Frank Thring cracks me up though because this, Ben-Hur, a couple of other historical epics and I didn't see him again until THE MAN FROM HONG KONG where it was jarring to find him in a business suit instead of a toga. The poor man's Vincent Price!
VICE RAID 1959 -- A cop gets set up by Mamie Van Doren but later helps her catch a bus back home.
Not to be confused with VICE SQUAD 1982 - Season Hubley seemed to specialize in prostitute parts. She takes us on a journey through all kinds of perverts--they don't leave much to the imagination. Wings Hauser is a crazy pimp named Ramrod (he also sings the title song "Neon Slime."). What is interesting with this beyond the fact that "go ahead, make my day" is used a year before Eastwood made it famous is that as a Hemdale production there are some similarities to the Terminator. Same LA locations, unstoppable killer hunting a woman...
Just one of those things you notice...

Getting over a high fever at the moment, so I lay on the couch like a bump on a log and watched TCM this morning. Luckily, I got to catch Johnny Eager (’41), one of those movies I’ve always wanted to see and never quite gotten around to seeing. It’s tons of fun, typically noir-y in all the right ways (tons of hardboiled dialogue: a guy pulls a gun on Robert Taylor’s Johnny but asks him to get out of the car first, because he doesn’t want to “stain the cushions”), with a surprising number of twists and unexpected directions it takes. Van Heflin won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Taylor’s sidekick (who seems to be in love with him, at least platonically), and he’s superb in the role. Really good movie.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947). Danny Kaye as the dreamer who fantasies about being lots of different people - particularly hilarious when he is being a hat designer. Gets involved with spies, but the plot doesn't really matter, the hilarious daydream sequences are the best bits.
Knock On Wood (1953). Danny Kaye as a ventriloquist who has secret plans hidden in his dummy (unknown to him) and ends up being chased all over London by spies. Very amusing.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). Thriller about a man whose daughter is kidnapped to prevent him revealing the details of an assassination plot. It has an excellent beginning, but tails off later and ends with a rather boring shootout - I was expecting something cleverer.

Seabiscuit 2003, directed and written by Gary Ross The story about the underdog racing horse that thilled America during the depression. It's an entertaing and well-made movie based on a real story, about the people from different directions of life who believed in this horse, and healed themselves from past sorrows. ![](https://www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/images/newsite/sea_600.jpg) ![](https://iv1.lisimg.com/image/6666485/714full-seabiscuit-%282003%29-photo.jpg) ![](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTcxODkwMzM5MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODI0NDAzMw@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1498,1000_AL_.jpg) ![](https://static.fusionmovies.to/images/character/35J9RxK4uxTY3uMmcozkGf2zf4JjpTHM_SC_FEP2YI0G07Ti5SOHtfd1bZZe9gQE9X8NWg_sV9BmB7zYJE2kZmPw4vqdtbpiilmbst3jAxs.jpg?1) An interesting 45 minutes documentary about the real Seabiscuit was included on the DVD.
