WATERLOO 1970 - I had seen it before and forgot most of it, even Orson Welles in a funny wig. But then while watching I remembered the elaborate ballroom sequence (lit by candle chandeliers which seem to go into infinity) and a battle sequence that is apocalyptic and impossible to replicate in cgi. But as a movie it's rather bland. But that battle sequence...

the Goose Steps Out (1942). Will Hay is William Potts, a schoolteacher who is mistakenly arrested as a German spy called Mueller to whom he happens to be identical. When the real Mueller is arrested, the authorities persuade the reluctant Potts to go to Germany pretending to be Mueller in order to find out about a secret weapon the Germans are developing. The funniest scene is where Mueller, who is supposed to be teaching a class of German youth about English life so they can become spies, gets into a discussion about English pronunciation ("why isn't Slough pronounced Sluff?") and then shows them how to do an English equivalent of the Nazi salute, using two fingers, and has them all saluting the portrait of Hitler.

Murder Ahoy(1964). The last of the Miss Marple murder mysteries with Margaret Rutherford. This one is an original story, not based on an Agatha Christie novel, and set aboard a training ship for teenage boys, of which Miss Marple is apparently one of the governors. Lionel Jeffries is the captain of the ship. Quite amusing.

The Lady Vanishes (1979). As remakes go, I think this one is quite good.

Just Mercy (2019) / Destin Daniel Cretton Rented from Prime
This is a pretty good movie based a real-life story of a black man, Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), unjustly imprisoned for a murder that he did not commit. While McMillian waits on death row, a young idealistic lawyer,Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), from Delaware, comes to Alabama to fight to have McMillian's case retried or get the case dropped entirely. The struggle is long and hard with many setbacks...
Look for Oscar-caliber performances from Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan. Also look for good performances from Oscar winner, Brie Larson (as Eva Ansley).
Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan): I came out of law school with grand ideas in my mind about how to change the world. But Mr. McMillian made me realize we can't change the world with only ideas in our minds. We need conviction in our hearts. this man taught me how to stay hopeful, because I now know that hopelessness is the enemy of justice. Hope allows us to push for word, even when the truth is distorted by the people in power. It allows us to stand when they tell us to sit down, and to speak when they say be quiet.
Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) : [in the US Senate Hearing on the Death Penalty] Through this work, I've learned that each of us is more than the worst thing that we've ever done; that the opposite of poverty isn't wealth, the opposite of poverty is justice; that the character of our nation isn't reflected on how we treat the rich and the privileged, but how we treat the poor, the disfavored, and condemned.

The Sea Wolves 1980, old-fashioned impossible mission action adventure about sinking Nazi ships in the once colony Goa in India. The delight is the old-fashioned cast of Gregory Peck, Davis Niven and Trevor Howard (plus Roger Moore) and that that the crew is filled with familiar faces of older faces/actors of war movies of the 1950's and 1960s.

The Village (2004) / M. Night Shyamalan I "don't get this movie at all. It must be "about" something since it really drags. But, I don't understand what it is about. Mrs. Clack [Cherry Jones] : My sister did not live passed her 23rd birthday. A group of men raped and killed her. They stuffed her in a dumpster three blocks from our apartment.
August Nicholson [Brendan Gleeson] : My brother worked in an emergency room downtown. A drug addict came in with a wound to his ribs. My brother tried to dress the wound. He pulled a gun from his jacket and he shot my brother through his left eye. Alice Hunt [ Sigourney Weaver] : My husband, Michael, left for the supermarket at a quarter past 9 in the morning. He was found with no money and no clothes in the East River three days later.
Edward Walker [William Hurt]: My father was shot by a business partner who then hanged himself in my father's closet. They had argued over money. I am a professor. I teach American History at the University of Pennsylvania. I have an idea that I would like to talk to you about.

Krakatoa East of Java (1968). Slow and ponderous film which takes a very long time to get to the exciting bit - the eruption of Krakatoa and the tsunami. That bit is spectacular though. They didn't get the title right - Krakatoa is actually west of Java.

GAMERA THE INVINCIBLE 1966 - I had never seen the original film before (unless I forgot). In fact, I had forgotten all about the poor man's Godzilla, actually though-the special effects in this one are in some ways more sophisticated than what Toho was doing at the same time. In one scene you can see little puppets running by a window. And Gamera is a real fire-breather unlike Godzilla who has to settle for atomic breath. There is a fair bit of charm with the story focusing on a child who seeks to befriend him--I will assume the Godzilla films took up the idea eventually and were inspired by everyone's favorite flying turtle.
COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT 1970 -If the film had just been a standard Frankenstein clone that would still be interesting, but what makes the film so intriguing and absorbing is that Forbin is not just a scientist who makes a colossal mistake--in fact, he is happy to see Colossus learning and behaving beyond his wildest dreams. Even after many are killed, Forbin is still caught up in fascination with the computer. He does not expect that by the end his relationship with the machine will be reversed--not as master and slave, but child and parent. Or like God and Adam. Despite comparisons to Hal-9000 and Skynet, Colossus is much more compelling a machine since you do not actually know that it is wrong about its predictions for the future.
"We can coexist, but only on my terms. You will say you lose your freedom. Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for humankind as to be dominated by others of your species. Your choice is simple....In time you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love."
