Forbidden Planet (1956) by Fred M. Wilcox Had not seen the film, at least some of it, since it was shown on late night cable, years ago. But one I have been meaning of, getting a hold of, ever since. Picked up a neat looking Blu-ray release, by TCM Classics and one which featured lots of bonus material, two follow up films or tv-episodes, and yeah, still a very impressive looking and sounding release, surely among the best and most important sci-fi adventures of the 50s, and kind of strange, I guess, to watch such a young and serious Leslie Nielsen, not with grey/white hair, and yeah, I liked this one. Still, for me, of the similar themed films of that period, I believe The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is still my favorite, but Forbidden Planet is not that far off. And ended up with a rating of: 7/10

In the Soup (1992) Steve Buscemi lives in an NYC garret, dreams of being a film-maker and is in love with the woman next door (understandably, as she's Jennifer Beals). A backer for his unfilmable script materialises in the form of charismatic small-time gangster Seymour Cassel, who'd like him to do some odd jobs in return... Likeable offbeat comedy with a lot to recommend it, including gorgeous black-and-white photography. Thanks for bringing this one up, as it sure looks/sounds very interesting. Might have to pick up a DVD (if one excists) of it, soon.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997). One of my favorite comedies of the late 90s. Has a great chemistry between the leads, and lots of laughs, and just recently picked it up again (have a VHS copy as well), on DVD. Will surely re-watch it during the summer.

Come on Kijii, tell us what you thought of it? PS. I watched MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM after reading your most recent post. I also bought a Blu ray of THE PRINCE OF TIDES - after picking up your shocked vibe when I said I didn't like it. Gosh did I enjoy it this time round, it's a wonderful, wonderful film. My love hate relationship with Barbara Streisand is now all love and I like THE PRINCE OF TIDES almost as much as I love THE WAY WE WERE.

The Invisible Boy (1957) by Herman Hoffman I guess with the success of Forbidden Planet, and making Robby the Robot, into such an iconic well loved figure, they thought including him into severals films or tv-shows, was a good idea. Sure, the film opens up, not all that bad. There is some potential in there, but after a while, the kid begins to go on my nerves, big time. And poor Robby, while still having a certain charm to it, just cannot save the film from soon becoming a very tiresome and rather boring adventure. Where it is not much like the movie poster, but that is no news, when it comes to older 50s sci-fi artwork and movie designs. This film, would probably have been a lot "smoother", if it were turned into a tv episode, for about 20-25 minutes, but not 90 looooong minutes, with mostly characters I never cared for, in the first place. Only saw it, because it were featured as bonus material, from my Forbidden Planet Blu-ray release. The best thing about the film, is how the movie poster, seems like Robby is about to slam-dunk that annoying brat, into kingdom come, sadly, that did not happen. 4/10

Have you seen the other three movies based on Pat Conroy novels?-- The Lords of Discipline The Great Santini-- Conrack along with- Prince of Tides They are all very good!! I found The Lords of Discipline very gripping!!

A documentary I stumbled over on YT. This was great for someone who like me knows and have heard about William Castle, bit I guess a waste of time if one knows too much the subject.

Joan of Arc (1948) / Victor Fleming
I had high hopes for this one but they were never realized. This movie introduced a new actor---Jose Ferrer. Bot Ferrer and Bergman received Oscar nominations here...

Gaslight(1944). An odd film. Charles Boyer is for some reason trying to drive his wife Ingrid Bergman crazy, this goes on for rather a long time before someone (a Scotland Yard detective rather improbably played by Joseph Cotten) does something about it. By the end of the film I still couldn’t understand why Charles Boyer needed to drive her mad but I was past caring. Angela Lansbury is excellent as the pert housemaid.

"Into the West" 2 Irish traveler boys are given a horse by their grandfather, the horse followed the grandfather while he was on the road. The boys keep the horse in their apartment The widowed Dad discontinued the traveler life after the death of his wife) of course this causes problems, the police take the horse, a rich man buys it off the cop, the boys see it on TV, steal the horse back and take off into the West of Ireland pretending they are cowboys. They eventually end up on the beach where the horse came from, the father is waiting and the police track them there -won't tell anymore but I believe the horse was the spirit of their dead mother. This film did show how mistreated and misunderstood Travelers are in Ireland.

Blue Thunder 1983 directed by John Badham (whatever became of him?). Action movie about a new advanced police helicopter, that might be too advanced for very secret reasons, in other words there is a secret agenda. I had nearly forgotten about this movie, but remember that I thought it was too violent. Seeing it again, yes there is violence but it's nothing compered to what can be seen nowdays. Bodycount was "only" five, but a lot of buildings are blown up or destroyed. It starred Roy Scheider, Warren Oates (one of his last roles), Candy Clark, Daniel Stern, Malcolm McDowell and others. Led to a short-lived TV-series. Even toys were made:

THE AFRICAN QUEEN Another classic movie ticked off my cinematic bucket list, and richly entertaining as well. Been reading for years about the location shoot, but the combination of African and studio footage doesn't hold up very well (and the two body doubles for Robert Morley in the long shots look nothing like each other, let alone Morley). As with so many Old Hollywood movies, what makes this great is the acting and the dialogue. "What a curious feeling, to have people shooting at you!"

BENEATH THE 12-MILE REEF 1953 I watched this after it was mentioned in a LUX radio show where they interviewed actresses who were going to school on the FOX studio lot. Debbie Reynolds was interviewed for one program, and Gloria Gordon for this one-- portraying the sister of Robert Wagner. I got curious as they mentioned this film although turns out she's hardly in it. Appropriate tie-in to the LUX show since sponges were at the center of the movie and they are selling soap. I too use Lux for my complexion. Who doesn't?
