If I may ask, what country do you live in wickedkittiesmom? I live in the U.S., I'm from the Chicago metropolitan area but in 2001 we moved to Las Vegas, NV, then New Mexico and now we're living in the Mobile, Al. area ( I don't fit in the Deep South). When I was single I also lived in Greece for a short time. Where do you live? I live in Port Elizabeth (now renamed Gqeberha), South Africa. I don't live on the beachfront (God forbid), but our apartment overlooks Fort Frederick, the harbor and Nelson Mandela Bay. It's a beautiful old area, and we love our spacious apartment and all the wonderful things it, but crime is an ever present danger and one of these days we are going to have to move, which makes me a bit sad. I have also lived in Cape Town - where I was born and Johannesburg. The reason I asked where you lived was because there's a movie goldmine in cyberspace and i wandered why you weren't accessing it?

Do you need to use a VPN to download or stream in the States? I'm a liberal democrat, but I think I would fit like a glove in Mobile, Alabama. Sorry you don't in the Deep South. In my dreams I want to live in Savannah, Georgia. Our View.

Jeffersoncody: Liberal democrats do not fit in the Deep South as well as non Christians. I'm a Democrat and I do not believe in religion. It looks beautiful where you live.
I'm a dinosaur when it comes to technology, I don't even know how to "stream." I don't even have a smart phone (WKD has one) - I don't have anyone to call, most of my friends are dead and those still living are more backwards than I am.

Take Me High (1973). As far as I know unique in being a musical set in Birmingham (England). I find it charming though it’s not highly rated critically.

That said, your reply rwas both a bit sad and rather sweet, and I really enjoyed it. Thank you for being so honest and open; you sound very human. You have one thing that makes me envious, though. Because of my longtime partner's chest problems - which are severe to say the least, we no longer have a cat. Having had cats my whole life, I find it hard without a feline in our home. When my beloved golden retriever and soul mate, Jake, died, it was no more dogs (I dream of retriever puppies) either. So give your "wicked kittie" a hug from me. PS. If you don't mind me asking wickedakittiesmom, how did you and wkd's end up in Mobile, Alabama?

jeffersoncody: My husband lost his job in Albuquerque, NM and was offered a good job in Mobile Al. (the job market in NM was bleak at the time and WKD was in his late 50's) so we packed everyone up and moved here. It was a choice between Alabama and Texas and I told WKD that I would never live in Texas. If I were a young woman, I don't think I could stay here but now that I'm old, I don't go out that much and have my cats, books and DVD's. I do have very nice neighbors which mean a lot but I know that I have to keep my political views to myself, this is the first place I have lived that I've felt I have to be careful. Weather is nice as long there are no hurricanes, tropical storms and tornadoes and the air conditioning works in the summer, mid May - mid October is very hot and humid. Sorry about your partner's chest problems and you not being able to have cats. I have a mild cat allergy, when they lick my face my eyes swell and when I groom them, I get "plugged up" but some steam makes me feel better.

Trial and Error (1997, dir. Jonathan Lynn). Director Jonathan Lynn also helmed My Cousin Vinny (1992), and in many ways this flick is Vinny’s spiritual sequel. It isn’t nearly as good as Vinny, which is a masterpiece of script construction (by Dale Launer, whose brilliant dialogue is sorely missed here) and is legally accurate in nearly every respect, but it doesn’t deserve its consignment to virtual oblivion. For one thing, it feels like a genuine movie, not an extended episode of a sitcom (as some critics charged at the time). The shots are nicely composed, the characters are all human, not one-note. (Roger Ebert pointed out that Charlize Theron—gorgeous and instantly lovable—looks both ways across the street when running to meet her beloved Jeff Daniels.) Kramer Michael Richards is a hoot, especially in the court scenes and when playing off the lovely Jessica Steen. Trial and Error is not an object lesson in construction: Some elements go nowhere fast, some are too clichéd, some jokes are too broad and too silly. And—except for Torn’s hilariously tearful monologue at the end—it lacks anything close to Dale Launer’s ingenious original phrasings (e.g., “dead-on-balls accurate”). But this is still an always fun and frequently funny little movie. It’s not the classic that Vinny is, but it should be better known. I actually saw this one, at the cinema during summer of 1997 with my mum. We were almost alone in the theatre, and not long after, it was taken down, and I kind of "forgot" the film, or more the title. However, I finally picked it up again, on DVD, much later. Yeah, it might not be as good or well written as it might have, but it is a lot fun, and one of those movies I should probably re-watch, as I have always been a bit of a fan of Jeff Daniels and then you have Michael Richards and a very stunning and young Charlize Theron into the mix as well. Theron and Daniels had one year earlier, played in the film 2 Days in the Valley, which is another solid mid 90s movie, with a great cast, but I guess one which sadly never quite hit off with either the critics of the audience at the time of its release. Seems like one, which grew on, due to being a late night cable-tv favorite among the viewers, and is also how I first came across it.

"Lolita" with Sue Lyon, James Mason and Shelley Winters. Stanley Kubrick originally wanted Haley Mills for the part but the Disney studios nixed that, I think she would have been perfect for the role and she wanted it. I'm reading Haley Mills' autobiography (not a big fan of autobiographies because I usually find them boring) but this is full of interesting information i.e. how she lost most of her her early earnings (about 95%) to the British tax system but she really has no bitterness about it. Her son encouraged her to write the autobiography and I'm glad he did.

Searing portrait of a family ruled by greed, adapted from a Broadway play by Lillian Hellman. Bette Davis delivers what may be her most controlled and icy performance as she connives and maneuvers her way through a labyrinth of incestuous corruption involving theft and murder (if killing someone by inaction can be called murder). Several members of the Broadway cast made their film debuts in this movie. Richard Carlson and Theresa Wright provide the only warmth in an essentially bleak setting. There is a high resolution copy on Youtube as I write this, but it may not be available very long.

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). The Place Beyond the Pines is, IMHO, a great movie. What did you think of it Chalice? And here is a movie with Scarlett Johannson I highly recommend. Check out A Love Song for Bobby Long.
