The Big Sleep (1946). Entertaining but very complicated mystery story. Humphrey Bogart gets beaten up quite a lot.

Lady for a Day (1933). A poor New York Apple seller (May Robson) has a daughter who has grown up in a convent in Spain and believes her mother is a society lady. When May Robson gets a letter saying her daughter is coming to visit, she doesn’t know what to do, but gangster Warren William, who thinks she brings him good luck, steps in to help. He borrows a posh apartment for Robson to stay in, finds a man to pretend to be her husband etc. Of course it all leads to complications. The film was mildly entertaining though there several unanswered questions - who is the father of May Robson’s daughter for example, and how did she end up in Spain? And how did she come to have a child so late in life? (She seems to be at least 60 years older than her daughter). Alas, these questions will never be answered.

BABYLON (2022). 9,5 out 10. My favorite film of 2022, this dazzling, shocking, profane, exhilarating, affecting three hour plus epic is a glorious love letter to the movies. It is hardly surprising it hasn't been a box office hit with the masses - or the easily offended, but anybody who loves movies with all their heart and soul will savour every splendid, sumptuous second of this brilliantly directed, acted and designed film. Nominated for 3 Oscars (production design, costume design, music), it is beyond ludicrous that actors Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt (as a thinly disguised John Gilbert), Jean Smart, Diego Calva and writer-director Damien Chazelle did not receive Academy Award nominations. Eric Roberts and Toby Maguire shine as sordid supporting characters. Lukas Haas is memorable too. Fans of the Silent era won't want to miss this one. The film's final 15 minutes features an older, wiser Manny Torres (Calva) watching Singing in the Rain and had me in tears - of both joy and sadness. It's not for all tastes, but Babylon held me spellbound from beginning to end and it comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. "They said if I don't have the money in a week, they'll pour Acid on my Pussy!"

Cafe Metropole (1937). Adolphe Menjpu is the owner of the cafe Metropole in Paris. He is in financial difficulties, but thinks he has won a large sum of,money from American tourist Tyrone Power. But then it turns out Tyrone is broke and can’t pay him, so Adolphe blackmails him into pretending to be a Russian prince and romancing heiress Loretta Young. And of course i5 all gets complicated. It was quite amusing.

Dark Passage (1947). Rather strange crime drama with Humphrey Bogart as an escaped convict who was imprisoned for murdering his wife. He is out to prove his innocence, with the help of Lauren Bacall who he conveniently runs into. The first half hour or so is shot entirely from Bogart’s viewpoint so you don’t see his face. The he finds a plastic surgeon who transforms his face in 90 minutes and when the bandages come off lo he is Bogart. But still needs to prove his innocence. But that is easier said than done. Definitely not as good as Bogart and Bacall’s two previous films.

A Night To Remember (1942). Comedy murder mystery. Brian Aherne is a writer, he and his wife Loretta Young move into a basement apartment in Greenwich Village so he can get inspiration for a book he wan to write, but the other residents keep getting murdered. Mildly amusing.

Amsterdam(2022) A Post WWI/Pre WWII Mystery Spy Drama/comedy. A great cast got me to give this a shot with some trepidation, since I worry that with comedy-dramas where may be too much of one to detract from the other. But by the 2nd half of the movie my skepticism was gone and I was into the story, as there was just enough comedy to lighten the mood occasionally, while not becoming a distraction. And the fine cast didn't hurt. 7/10.

The Prowler 1951 directed by Joseph Losey One ought to be able to trust a Police Officer, but don't trust this one. Van Heflin and Evelyn Keyes are the main stars in this, what turns into a cat and mouse game, since Heflin's character has a more devious plan to catch Keyes' character than just showing general concern. It was she who called the police about a prowler on her lawn, and then he returns again and again, getting more comfortable in her home, and then in civilian clothes. There is only one problem, she's already married... Tight and at times intense excitement, show's how much that can be done on an obviously low budget.

THE FLOWER OF EVIL (2003)Late Claude Chabrol, not quite a black comedy, or a thriller, or the satire on bourgeois values that he obviously wanted it to be. With all the talent behind and in front of the camera, a letdown.

Dodsworth (1936). Walter Houston is Sam Dodsworth, who has just sold his successful business and is looking forward to a trip to Europe with his wife, Ruth Chatterton. On the boat going to England they meet Mary Astor, a charming widow, and Mrs Dodsworth enjoys a flirtation with the suave David Niven. However, things start to fall apart in Paris, where Mr Dodsworth is enjoying sightseeing while his wife gets involved with yet another suave man. Mr Dodsworth gets fed up and goes home, leaving Mrs Dodsworth in Paris, but there are more troubles ahead. A fairly entertaining story of a couple drifting apart, with Walter Houston and Ruth Chatterton both very good.

Woman in the Dunes aka Suna no onna 1964 directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara This Japanese movie was Oscar nominated both for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director, but not the same year. The story is rather simple, an entomologist on vacation is trapped by local villagers into living with a woman whose life task is shoveling sand for them. The woman lives in a house that is digged deep down in the sand dunes, and impossible to climb up from. At first he panics, then he tries different ways to escape, when that fails he slowly accepts this life and even makes the woman, who is rather young, pregnant. At first I wondered if had chosen the right movie to watch, and it's nearly 2,5 hours, but slowly it grew on my as one begins to feel for those two characters and to see how they adapt to every situation that unfolds. In the end it turned out to have been a really good experience to have watched it.

Lured (1947). Murder mystery set in London. Someone is murdering beautiful girls they have met through placing an advert in the personal column in a newspaper. Lucille Ball is working as a taxi dancer in a dance hall, when her friend disappears she goes to Scotland Yard with the advert the girl answered. Inspector Charles Coburn persuades he to help catch the murderer by answering likely adverts in the paper and going to meet the possible murderers. She has a number of strange encounters and also gets involved with suave nightclub owner George Sanders. But could he be the murderer? Quite an enjoyable mystery with some interesting situations for Lucille Ball to cope with.

The Sin of Nora Moran (1933) Zita Johann is on Death Row. Flashbacks recount the series of unfortunate events the lead her there. 6/10.
