Appointment with Crime 1946 directed by John Howard This is a British crime or noir movie starring William Hartnell in a rare leading role as tough as nails low-life criminal who gets caught during a badly planned smash-and-grab jewelry store robbery. He keeps silent and does his stretch in prison, all along, he nurses a grudge against those who runned out of him. That grudge grows to a full-blown, murderous vengeance scheme that takes him all the way to the top, a couple of art-dealers by day, criminals by night. He is also shadowed by Scotland Yard, since dead bodies keeps popping up. It's a decent and interesting crime movie made on an obviously low budget with some interesting aspects. The art dealers, played by Herbert Lom and Alan Wheatley, as played are, even if it's never mentioned, a homosexual couple, is an interesting touch. Worth a look if you have the time.

Arise My Love (1940). In 1939, Ray Milland is in prison in Spain, about to be executed by the Nationalists for having fought for the Republic. Claudette Colbert, an ambitious journalist, manages to get him out of prison by pretending they are married. This part of the film is hilarious, but the rest of it is mostly serious, as Colbert and Milland fall in love and Europe embarks on WW2. Quite a good drama with a few funny bits - I would definitely watch the first part again.

The Set-Up(1949) Robert Ryan as a has been boxer hanging on and hoping for a chance at that one good pay day. Concentrates on the brutal and seedy side of the sport of the time. 5½/10.

A Song Is Born (1948). A gagster’s moll (Virginia Mayo) takes refuge in an institute of music where seven professors are writing a history of music. The head of the institute (Danny Kaye) falls for her. Mildly amusing comedy which is mainly a Vehicle for various well known musicians to perform - Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey etc.

NATE AND HAYES 1983 - a New Zealand-made pirate movie starring Tommy Lee Jones which was bought by Paramount and deliberately dumped so as to prevent it from taking the shine off Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom which borrowed a few ideas from it. Interestingly, this film was made in response to Raiders of the Lost Ark--there's a fear of snakes joke at the beginning which likely was inspired by that. This may well have been the prototype for the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean as well. It's a decent adventure that feels like a throwback to the 1950s except for the increased violence. It is refreshingly devoid of character complications which would be tacked onto a Hollywood version but I think it could have used a little more Jenny Seagrove involvement. The bad guy is good but anonymous--he reminded me of a skinny Donald Pleasence.

Room at the Top 1959 directed by Jack Clayton. I know it's a famous movie that one ought to have seen, but this one left my totally aloof. I just couldn't get into it, and what it was all about, that made it so famous. It's about an ambitious young accountant (Laurence Harvey) who plots to wed a wealthy factory owner's daughter (Heather Sears) despite falling in love with a married older woman (Simone Signoret). Oscars went to Simone Signoret and Screenplay by Neil Patterson. Nothing wrong with the movie, I just didn't see "it".

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - Much of multi-verse idea float around the media the last decade. This movie take that idea and put it on high hear. Fast paced and mostly entertaining. However, I kind of expect this to be like a DC Marvel movie, and I was right. Weak dialogues and silly jokes, and the emotional stuff seemed forced. Okay movie, but not the masterpiece I keep hearing. The acting were superb though. Great seeing James Hong in the movie. The visual was dazzling.

Couldn't agree more, Rufus, except that I didn't find it at all entertaining. I tried three times and finally gave up -- never got all the way through it. But I, too, loved seeing James Hong. He looks great at his age -- just a couple of weeks shy of 94!

Andrea Riseborough: How the British star gatecrashed the Oscars with a film that made £22,000 The British star secured a Best Actress nomination after receiving support from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Edward NortonIt's not quite fair to say that To Leslie came out of nowhere. It was one of the more respected indie releases of 2022 and has a 98% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. That's a better critical hit rate than any of the 10 nominees for Best Picture — albeit from a much lower number of reviews. Riseborough has also received some acclaim from awards bodies. She was nominated in November for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance and the National Board of Review selected To Leslie as one of its 10 best independent releases of the year. The film and Riseborough also won a handful of festival awards, including on UK shores at the Raindance Film Festival, where To Leslie was recognised for Best Actress and as Film of the Festival. uk.movies.yahoo.com/to-leslie-andrea-riseborough-oscar-nomination-120256163.html

Didn't get a screener. But it sounds quite intriguing, and I'm looking forward to seeing it whenever I have access to it. Thanks for the write-up and the recommendation.

Rewatched All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). Enjoyed it much more this time than I did being forced to view it in my high school history class.

A Bullet for Joey (1955) George Raft concocts an unnecessarily complicated plan to abduct an atomic scientist for an unnamed foreign power. Edward G Robinson is the cop trying to stop him. 5/10.

He looks great at his age -- just a couple of weeks shy of 94! The phrase "style over substance" applies perfectly to this movie. It did keep me engaged, but it is messy and silly. The sad thing is that this may win the best picture. So far I have not seen a 2022 movie that blew me away. Saw Tár yesterday, other than Cate Blanchett's performance, very disappointing. Avatar was too long and I felt asleep half way in the theater. Top Gun may benefit if I see it in the theater. The repulsive Blonde wasted Ana de Armas' performance. She did get the nomination as a redemption. Nope started out good but was ultimately nope. Many disappointment. The so-so Elvis with one of the worst Tom Hanks performance right now is the best movie I have seen from 2022. That is the state of modern acclaimed movies. I have a feeling The Banshees of Inisherin or The Whale may be my kind of movie. Will try to get to All Quiet on the Western Front later. Also heard good thing about She Said. To Leslie as JC referred to sounds interesting too. There is still hope.
