Rewatched DOC SAVAGE-THE MAN OF BRONZE - 1975 - Notorious for its failed attempt at a 1930s-era adventure a few years before Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is well-known that the studio made changes to incorporate stupid humor but most of the film is serious in tone. What I am wondering about--whether George Pal really could have made a film that was sufficiently exciting based on the material--because if you look at his earlier films--the Time Machine or Dr Lao--it's not like he had done much in the way of pulp adventure. Rod Taylor only has some brief interactions with the morlocks (aka Paul Williams's groupies). Atlantis the Lost Continent wasn't quite that either. I get the impression he was more attracted to the concept of the superman intellect and devotion to self-improvement than he was with the adventure element based on how the movie plays in its serious parts. I assume the budget of the film was cut--but it still feels like a very stagey-almost cheap 1950s film. I would have assumed they realized this when they were filming the scenes by the Gilligan's Island set (the tribe village looks so cheap). I watched a Making Of film on it and most of the crew looked past 60 and it makes you realize how much of an "old studio guard" film this was. Not to say that I think it needed a Spielberg or Lucas--but maybe Andrew McLaglen would have had more compelling action scenes.

GUNMEN OF THE RIO GRANDE 1966 - Guy Madison spaghetti western about Wyatt Earp. Some of the lighting and camera set ups reminds one of Leone but otherwise it is a very traditional kind of western. There's a guy who appears in this (and a million other euro westerns). Fernando Sancho--who kind of resembles a Mexican Richard Boone. He is always playing the bandito.

Clerks III(2022) I really liked Clerks, and Clerks II had it's moments, but I just couldn't get into this one. Kind of reminded me of those old Bowery Boys comedies after the gang hit their 40s. Sorry Kevin. 4/10.

LITTLE CIGARS- 1973 Came across this in a list of movies released this week--it is about a gangster's mistress who joins up with midget thieves to go on a crime spree. Feels like a Bogart movie if he was under five feet. As a Samuel Arkoff production don't expect it to be a sensitive examination of those of short stature but the movie does center on them and it was diverting enough as a tall tale.
Sorry, couldn't help it.

BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES- 1973--released 50 years ago. Not the best but still watchable. Roddy McDowall had another movie out which we will get to tomorrow. Severn Darden in response to being reminded about radioactive contamination: "We may be radiated but at least we're active."

Meteor (1979)Chunks of outer space rock, including a very huge chunk, threaten to destroy much of the earth. The American and Russian governments reluctantly put aside their cold war politics to pool together their space technology and stop this disaster from happening. A major box office flop and known for being one of a handful of movies that killed off the disaster genre by the end of the 1970s. I was never really a fan of those disaster flicks and even less a fan of science fiction. However, I was curious to find out if Meteor is really as bad as they say. Turns out I thought it wasn't that bad at all. It had a decent script and a star-studded cast that was game with the material. The special effects were a mixed bag; some of the effects were impressive while other parts not so much. Also impressive was Brian Keith speaking fluent Russian. Sometimes the story ended up being a bit dreary, but overall still watchable. 6/10

COFFY 1973 - Pam Grier seeks revenge for her sister being strung out on drugs. Lively, uninhibited exploitation might be the best way to describe it, providing a star vehicle for Grier. Cleopatra Jones and the third Shaft film also came out this month. The thematic trajectory of these films varied studio to studio. In AIP's case there tended to be a playful cynicism on race relations--this film follows the trend of other AIP-produced blaxploitation which suggests racial empowerment is ultimately a hustle and the individual can't strive for anything other than personal survival in a corrupt world. Is that too high-brow an analysis? I don't think so because the story suggests that she rejects a black cop for a lighter-skinned political hopeful who promises to use wealth and power to help fight drug abuse. He looks a lot like Colin Powell and turns out to be a complete fraud. Another thing I notice with these Jack Hill exploitation films is that while they are filled with crude sensational depravity--there's an expert craftsmanship to it-he cares about the dramatic arc of the central character. Released 50 years ago.

The Phenix City Story(1955) Hard hitting crime drama with John McIntire as an honest attorney and prolific character actor Edward Andrews as the head of a ruthless(they're willing to kill anyone) mob that controls the vice in a 50s southern town. 6/10.
