for people that want to see similar, more arty films done on relatively big budgets. Studios are going to see these results, and pump out more superhero garbage instead.

I can't exactly blame them. How often do people (not us but you know, "people") complain about the lack of originality or sequel overload or all these superhero movies (again, not in reference to you)...only to ignore anything that seems different or strange? Going off that, I'm surprised Pacific Rim got a sequel and I think they purposely made it resemble an overlit Transformers/Power Rangers knockoff than the mecha/kaiju/animesque visual aesthetic of the 2013 film.

i did not see it, but did it need a 40m budget? Seems like 10m budget would be more appropriate
Ex Machina only made 36m worldwide off 15m budget

Here's an interesting video explaining what happened. Test groups apparently thought it was "too intellectual".

It was never a good idea to make "one size fits all" art. They base a film's success on whether it draws in the most people. This is not how the business used to operate. People who liked westerns went to westerns. People who liked sci-fi went to sci-fi. It was specialized, not broad-based except with roadshow films.
In this case the immediate problem is boring casting. They should try using charismatic newcomers from time to time. The cast list reads like a Canadian multiculturalism conference.

They lost me when I read the wikipedia description of the book's plot from start to finish and was left wondering what the hell it was supposed to be about.
That's never a good sign.

It never went to the big screen in my country...but Portman had been reason enough to boycott it => Polanski supporter.

I disliked the book, thought the plot was really confusing, but I was still looking forward to the movie.

It looks like a movie that smug friendless people will brag about watching when you ask them if they like sci fi.
