As usual, Hollywood can't let a notable foreign horror film go without a U.S. version, and I believe in this case they held up the U.S. release of REC to try to profit more off of the remake.
Not terrible, can't decide if I think Jennifer Carpenter is miscast. Can't see her as anyone but Deb in retrospect (though she was good in The Exorcism of Emily Rose).

There was a habit in the 00s to overpraise foreign horror, even if the ending completely ruined the movie (Haute Tension). I heard this adhered pretty close to the original, which kind of reaffirms to me that if it were American, that cheap jump scare fest wouldn't be nearly as lauded.

Agree on High Tension.
I haven't seen Rec actually, but I know that it is highly regarded and spawned some not so highly regarded sequels.
But Quarantine was perfectly adequate. I can't compare it to the original, but as its own thing there's nothing especially bad about it, so the excessive hate that I've seen seems to be mostly for the fact that it's an inferior remake. As far as bigger budgeted found footage movies go it's as good as or better than most. It's pretty much average overall, but the actors are pretty good, I think Carpenter does a serviceable job, and the other recognizable faces do solid and believable work too.
And, in general, I think a lot of foreign movies are not given a chance in the US market and largely because of the fact that distributors are testing the waters for a remake. There's a cliche that Americans won't watch foreign films, but I don't think Americans are generally given a chance to see a lot of foreign films in the main stream. If more of those movies were given a wide release perhaps the audiences would embrace the, but we don't really know.

And I don't mean to pan American remakes out of hand. The Ring and Dark Water were both good.

As much as I'm not a fan of "found footage" films... ... I liked this one.

It’s pretty much a shot for shot remake, but for some reason it’s nowhere near as good as the original.
