What was your first thought? My first thought was this is some kind of joke. They would never do that.
Was I ever wrong.

I thought: "They're going to re-implement them as a feature for a paid subscription."
Surprisingly, they missed the boat on that one. Kinda dumb.

Kinda dumb. oh man how i wish they had done that. i would gladly pay. i dont know if they realized that many people used the boards for work and they would be happy to pay a monthly subscription… i mean i cant be the only one.

Few would pay just to use a message board, but they could have made it a function of imdb pro.

I was completely stunned when I saw the announcement. Must have reread it at least three times to make sure I was reading it correctly. Then I was totally bummed out.
But hey, I'm quite happy here.

Surprised. But then I realized these companies are not interested in popularity and don't need to worry about money generation.

I already pay for imdb pro and there is many of us, i would easily pay a few bucks more if it had stayed (and was added as a feature of imdb pro). what a shame it wasnt. gonna go and cry about it in the shower now.

I was dismayed but not surprised. The trolling on the boards had reached toxic levels.

It sucked because that was pretty much the place to talk about movies even though it was overrun by the trolls/spammers especially in high traffic areas.
but here we are a year later and these boards are good enough. still, the official boards were better on some level as every now and then you would have some quality posts from people in the forums on random movies. basically movies that attracted the kids where overrun by spam but ones that had little to some traffic are usually solid. IMDb should have moderated the boards a bit. I wish they would have at least kept the boards open for specific movies even if they closed down the general Film General/Movie Awards and other generic/high traffic areas.

It was shocking but understandable, due to the amount of trolls across the majority of the major boards. I read the message for about a dozen times, just to let it sink in.
I had been on IMDb for close to 13 years at the time.

I wasn't very surprised because the trend of controlling internet speech was becoming an epidemic.

gonna go and cry about it in the shower now. You got to get over it. It has been over a year since they shut down the message boards.

It has been over a year since they shut down the message boards. working on it. but i feel it may still take some time. i am still in the depression phase of the grief process. went through denial (thinking it was a joke), anger (almost cancelled my imdb pro subscription), bargaining (emailing to Jeff Bezos), now thoroughly depressed (for about 10 months). I am guessing "acceptance" is next. that or suicide. not sure which yet.

I heard a rumor that old IMDB accounts could be purchased for a few bucks online, which is why the site was overrun by trolls towards the end.

A bit sad at the beginning, even if I wasn't very active in later years. It was pure luck that I got to know they were closing and that I found this place instead. Generally I think there is a nicer tone in here.
