ON THE TOWN was made by the same people that made SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, one of my favorite movies. They both have great dancing sequences, but this one doesn’t have interesting characters or an engaging plot. Some scenes are funny and NEW YORK, NEW YORK is catchy, but none of the other songs are memorable. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

OTT is a great film, doing for the movie musical what Oklahoma did for the stage musical.
Unfortunately most of Leonard Bernstein's original stage score was not used. The new songs are generally disappointing, with the exception of the title song.

I have heard that it was - at Gene Kelly's insistence - the first musical to be shot on location, rather than on a sound stage. If that's the case, maybe what some might call a relatively mediocre presentation, is the result of the novelty, and the challenges, of that kind of "shoot." Perhaps the creativity was focused elsewhere, such as showcasing NYC, over plot/music. I tend to agree with you that it isn't the "dazzle dance," of MGM's other efforts. However, I live on the west coast, and was in New York City for a few days last month. The theme, New York, New York, never left my brain. It was an ear-worm that was with me 24/7 ... and, it was great!

I disagree, vits. This movie is one of my favorite films in my most favorite genre--the musical.
Part of it, mostly early scenes, were shot on location in NYC, but the majority of it was filmed on Hollywood sound stages. It was just to awkward and expensive to lug that heavy Technicolor equipment cross country.
But what really makes the movie stand out for me is the hilariously goofy performance of Jules Munshin as Ozzie. IMO, it is one of Hollywood's tragedies that he never became the major star he deserved to be.

I love that film....it's very dated, but in a good way. It has a lot of retro charm.

Nice New York locations. Notice just before the end of this clip there is a a baricade in the background. That was barricades built to keep Sinatra's fans away and one can nearly see fans in the top of the shot.
I can't judge a movie from memory...it's been too long ago.
