The producers of the show likely didn't expect that when the show first aired, a lot of viewers thought Archie was a breath of fresh air and made a lot of sense. Fred Silverman later claimed that TPTB soon realized half the audience tuned in to laugh at Archie, the other half to laugh with him. Archie has become something of a cult figure with many who weren't even born when AITF first aired. In our PC/SJW culture Archie's views are almost never aired, even to be ridiculed.

Other than his racial views, most people agreed with Archie.

Archie's generation were aware of things that got filtered out since the 60s and 70s. Lots of younger people thanks to the internet are exposed to those ideas again because the mass media filter has lost control(at least for now--there's a purge happening at youtube with ADL urging to remove videos that are rightwing--but it may backfire since people will just migrant elsewhere--the media owners would need to have a Soviet-type of control to completely stamp it out-and no doubt that is what they are working towards)).
The Archie character was mocking the white working class male. Why would a majority of white working class people want to see themselves ridiculed by a show made by wealthy foreigners?
The attacks on white working class people especially men were ubiquitous at that time. I was watching a tv mystery film where Ralph Meeker says "I am a working man-I'm not ashamed of it." Later he turns out to be the bad guy in the story.
