Imagine the twitter explosion if Dunkirk wins Best Picture. Or if Get Out wins. Or if Three Billboards wins. Actually, twitter will go crazy no matter what movie wins. If Dunkirk wins, then the IMDb Top News page will be exploding with articles about "#Oscar's So White Again!" and how "Nolan didn't deserve anything because he's white and a male." Honestly that'll be the reaction if any white male wins. I'd be incredibly suprised if Greta Gerwig doesn't win for BD and Get Out for BP or vise versa.

I'm going to vote for who I want rather than who I assume will..... I want Phantom Thread to win, but I think Shape of Water will (and I was disappointed with it)

salomonj from what I heard it seems Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) is considered the front runner for Best Director.

What film is the darkhorse of the race? I honestly haven't seen any of the films outside of Dunkirk. I wanted to see the Post, Billboards, and Darkest Hour but never got around to it. The rest don't interest me in the least.

I think Gerwig willl get Screenplay, which is another blow to Three Billboard's BP chances. Del Toro is just dark enough to get Director. I would love if Get Out won BP, because a low budget horror film winning would be awesome, but I think the nominations are its prizes. Shape of Water is just political enough (protagonists: mute woman, black woman, Soviet spy, gay man / villain: white American family man with military background) to scratch those #woke itches.

I could be absolutely wrong but let’s not forget that La La Land was supposed to sweep last year and most predicted it for the BP win. I fully expect there to be some surprises, especially with the political climate the way it is now. Since Gerwig is the only female in the running, I’m positive the Academy will give her plenty of attention.

moviebuffbradGood point as that seems to be more reason it's got to win something.

Lately I'm wondering if Frances McDormand thinks she actually is her character in '3 Billboards.' At the last couple of awards shows she's been stalking around and other actresses giving her a wide berth like they're afraid she's going to kick them in the vagina.
