In the 1948 film A SONG IS BORN (a remake of 1941's BALL OF FIRE, and again directed by Howard Hawks) -- Danny Kaye (doing the Gary Cooper role) is one of a group of music historians researching modern swing. They invite band leaders and musicians Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Barnet and Mel Powell (all playing themselves) to their pad for a jam session.
The topper to it all -- Benny Goodman portrays one of the professors and is invited to sit in with them (he thought they just wanted to borrow his clarinet).
