I fully expected this to be as bad as advertised, and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't quite sink that low. After all, it would have to be insanely bad to be worse than the absolute garbage that was 2012.
The strongest points in its favor are that it makes a point of playing down the U.S.A! jingoism of Independence Day. Also, that it focuses on the mystery, more than the disaster action scenes. I guess that's a double-edged sword, because 80% of the audience probably came for the disaster scenes.
It throws around suspicion pretty well, you're never quite sure who the bad guy is. Except for
On the downside, some of the characters, like the annoying Brit, were underused, and the movie came undone a bit in the second half. I'm not sure how much of that is due to the reshoots. CGI ranged from good to bad, depending on the scene.
