i have to say no.
He's second to none (ok maybe a few) in terms of directing prowess and he has a few real great ones that i love(AI, Jaws) but overall i have to say he lacks a certain something to solidify him as a true auteur. His kiddie flicks have kinda paled (at least the Indy films) and there's always a bit of simplicity and sappiness, even if the film is adult on the surface. He's also got some unforgivable stinkers (Tintin come to mind).
i couldn't in all god conscience put him with Kubrick, Herzog, Lumet, Scorsese etc. I just feel there isn't enough.
but that's just me.
wbu?

Yes. He perfectly combine entertainment value with intelligence. His ability as a storyteller is up there with any of the directors you mentioned.
Lumet has had equal stinkers to Spielberg btw. Lovin' Molly is worse than anything Spielberg has made imo.
I don't think you are interested in hearing differing opinions though, I think you only want to hear from people who agree with you.

the whole auteur idea is kind of dead, never really a great concept to begin with, then people misused the term, better off without it

yes, has done extremely well from genre to genre, from horror to sci-fi, to comedy to drama, he's done it all and it all well.
however.....he lost his touch after Munich. personally I think his ego got a bit inflated, feeling he could coast, losing some ambition.
Someone like Scorsese feels as if he's yet to slow down, constantly pushing himself, trying to evolve with the times.

Yes. He's done some great work and as a rule, his movies are very good in every aspect.

I consider Spielberg an exceptional filmmaker, director and storyteller. Is he the best? I'm not sure. Do I consider him an all time great? Absolutely!

I think he's done excellent work to date. I'm terrible with names, but if someone knows a good list, then maybe a poll re-directors (If I haven't overlooked one) is in order.

Nah, besides a few films, like Jaws and Raiders, I'm not really a huge fan of his. He's too hit or miss for me.

he's great, if you look at his early indie work, then early family films and then some of his more dramatic mature work and forget any of his more recent family film attempts, besides ai and jurassic park which i enjoy.

Okaaay...well, back in 1993, he made this little movie you apparently never heard about called 'Schindler's List'. It was supposedly a 'true story', but 'ole Stevie just had to 'up' the evil when it came to portraying Nazis, and showed them doing things that never even happened. Make more money that way. That's lovely, except that Spielberg refused to take any salary for making that movie. In fact he donated his salary, plus all future profits he is ever due from the film, to the Shoah Foundation. So no, he didn't make any profits there. (Don't tell anybody, but you look like a bit of a fool right now.) And did he take any profit from those? Was it really? How was it debunked, and by whom?

The movie made money. Spielberg did not. So no, sorry, but you've been caught in... well, let's be generous and call it a moment of ignorance.
Ahhh, I see. So when you say it "has since been debunked", what you actually mean is "I choose to believe that it's a lie for no reason."
Yeah. Your agenda is pretty transparent. Fortunately you're too dumb to really push it well. Bye now.
