i am still hoping the Gringo will be fun to watch. Fingers crossed. Going tomorrow.
May watch next week.
I'm all for dramatic actors and actresses flipping the script and showing they can do different things, but when watching the trailer, I never got the feeling that any of these actors and actresses could be consistently funny. I've never watched them in their movies and say "I wonder how they'd be in a comedy." We've seen it from Theron in A Million Ways to Die in the West. That movie wasn't really her fault, but she didn't add to it, either.
Only guy who I kind of find funny is Copley, who I love and who had some lines both intentionally and unintentionally in District 9, Elysium, and Chappie.

true true, but I just enjoy comedies so much that I may end up enjoying even the ones that are not an outright quality fest. I know how hard it is to create comedy, let alone a good one. I am a fan of all attempts, one might say.
Re Copley - have you seen him in Hardcore Henry? if not you SHOULD! His best "comedic" role. So funny. (I love the whole movie but his role really stood out)

Totally forgot about him in Hardcore Henry. I didn't care for the movie that much but he was good and seeing a different directorial style was a good thing.
I like comedy as well, maybe because I'm a naturally serious person (Capricorn sun sign ftw lol). I'll give even the shoddiest of comedies a chance sometimes.

watch it. its totally worth it. and unexpectedly funny performances from Edgerton and Oyelowo.
well Newton looks good in Gringo too. (for a while) Unless you were talking about Sir Isaac. In which case there is Alan Ruck for you. See, Gringo can satisfy anyone with any taste… For me there was Joel of course, he had a pretty hot post-sex scene in it too. Great acting. I totally believed he was just having sex a minute before that. Actually just remembering that scene now get me kinda turned on. Odd. I wonder what it was about that scene.
The more I think about this movie, I like it. Not so much as a comedy though, but as a drama/dramedy with a little action.
Also, I can't recall connecting with a lead character in a comedy as hard as I did with Harold. This is kind of impressive drama-wise, and a testament to Oyelowo's acting skills. Probably the funniest character too. Gringo really has heart.
Didn't laugh as hard as I wanted to though, but some laughs were fine and chuckle worthy. I think this needed a tighter script (the Amanda Seyfried storyline in particular goes nowhere) and better joke writers because no one in this movie outside of Copley is known for their comedy skills.

yes his acting skills really stood out here, agreed.
no shame in self/advertising. its a good article. ad i like the design of your website too. and i wouldn't have otherwise found out we share an outlook on how to do this: " films are graded relative to their genre. I look at how well a film does what it sets out to do in its genre."
