The more I think about this movie, I like it. Not so much as a comedy though, but as a drama/dramedy with a little action.
Also, I can't recall connecting with a lead character in a comedy as hard as I did with Harold. This is kind of impressive drama-wise, and a testament to Oyelowo's acting skills. Probably the funniest character too. Gringo really has heart.
Didn't laugh as hard as I wanted to though, but some laughs were fine and chuckle worthy. I think this needed a tighter script (the Amanda Seyfried storyline in particular goes nowhere) and better joke writers because no one in this movie outside of Copley is known for their comedy skills.
Hate self-advertising but I wrote about this here, moviemanjackson.com/2018/03/22/gringo-movie-man-jackson/
no shame in self/advertising. its a good article. ad i like the design of your website too. and i wouldn't have otherwise found out we share an outlook on how to do this: " films are graded relative to their genre. I look at how well a film does what it sets out to do in its genre."

Same. No point in comparing this to Sicario or something completely different, but as a comedy/hybrid comedy compared to other comedies? Sure.
Glad I caught this before it left, think my theater dropped the screens after Tue.
