ds9documentary.com/This is the Deep Space Nine documentary in the works and is supposed to come out this year, I figured I'd make a thread on to provide updates on the film.

I wasn't a fan when DS9 originally aired, though I did enjoy some episodes...When the Defiant was brought on, and Worf joined the show, it did seem to get better, but it still wasn't the same, as what came before...
What surprised me was, that after the show went off the air, I expected the show to pop up with re-runs, and for some reason, the show just seemed to disappear. If it was airing in syndication, it wasn't in my town.
When the Show was released on DVD, I wanted it, but it just cost too much, and I wanted other shows and such... Eventually a repackaged edition was release on DVD, and Amazon had it on sale... I was finally able to pick up the whole series, and watch all of the episodes.
The show was better than I originally thought, and I was glad to have finally seen all of the episodes.
I just think the show was ahead of it's time... with it's "seasonal arc" approach, instead of the individual stories...as well as the “darker” & "edgier” tone of the show... and that is probably why it didn't do so well, at the time.
I'm looking forward to seeing the documentary.

Agreed with that.
DS9 wasn't a perfect show, but I actually think it was damn close to being the best Star Trek series ever. It brought a harder, darker edge to Trek, it largely deconstructed the "Humanity has become flawless" idea spread around in TNG, it brought long running story arcs to Trek... and awful lot of what DS9 did subsequently became standard practice in sci fi.
Not that I'm saying everyone copied DS9 in that, if any sci fi show deserves that credit it would be Babylon 5, which DS9... well, possibly took inspiration from, depending on who you listen to.
Rather, I'm saying that DS9 was an early adopter of those kind of trends. It saddens me that it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

I am watching the show on Netflix now. I am skipping some of the fluff and focusing on the main ones.
This was a show that was ahead of it’s time. It showed darker main characters and the bad guys are complex. Now I understand it’s cult status.

I'll always love the original the best, but DS9 was just awesome. Even at the time, I did not think it was dark. The content was and it was about war and serious issues, but there was also a lot of lighthearted stuff and a lot of good comedy.

Don't think there's much point in re-master certain footage, you couldn't exactly incorporate them into the existing eps, it'd be jarring.

DS9 is probably my favorite out of all Star Trek series, though I'd be hard pressed to say I dislike any of them (at least out of those set in the original timeline. I've only seen the pilot for Discovery)
I think the best feature about DS9 is its characters and their growth throughout the series. Every time I watch the series over, I absolutely love the evolution of the friendship between O'Brien and Bashir; it's just so great. Kira's story is wonderful, especially any time she was confronted with views about Cardassians that conflicted with the necessary black and white perspective she needed to have of them as all Cardassians being monsters when she was in the resistance. Jake not taking what might have been expected to be the conventional path of joining Starfleet was great; and how amazing is "The Visitor"? But then to have Nog be the one to join - seeing that first time he approaches Sisko about sponsoring him, and pleading with him that this isn't some scheme, but a genuine desire; and knowing what's in store, the good and the bad and what being an officer will ultimately mean to him. It's just so good.
I will say though, in more recent re-watches of the series, I do question a little bit Worf's inclusion into the show; and the direction of his character. There is a dynamic shift in the series once he arrives; and I find myself less and less enamored with his story or Jadzia's after that point. I feel she loses her character identity a little once he joins the show; and especially once they begin their relationship together. In the earlier seasons her past with the Klingon culture by way of Curzon is there, but it's not as huge an influence in her character behavior as it becomes post Worf; and there aren't as many instances where her character alone is explored or developed, the way others do. She sort of becomes defined by that relationship after that point; and to what degree Worf is able to set himself apart from that relationship is almost entirely occupied with his relationship with Martok and pulling double duty as a Starfleet officer serving the Klingon empire.
But they also somehow manage to make him more of a stick in the mud than he was on TNG; making for some rather disappointing character choices. Where's the man who socialized with his fellow officers, playing poker in his off hours, or took Diana Troy on a moon lit walk on the beach in the holodeck? Where's the man who was simply comfortable taking off his freaking uniform from time to time? I pretty much hate the episode where they go to Risa....

World premiere was last weekend and there was plenty of positive reaction to it on twitter, hell there was too many tweets and they were too positive - although perhaps the film is THAT good?

Update explaining why the Doc won't be released this year after all, I'm unconvinced about the HD remastering mind you, but they are.

Another update on the doco. Quite frankly, I call BS that the re-mastered footage will change what I think of DS9.

I would have laughed if he opened that door and someone lost their shit, because he exposed the materials to light or some other damaging environmental conditions that basically destroyed all of the original footage.
While I'm sure it won't be some type of awe inspiring religious moment that his last words suggests, I kind of get the motivation; which is to create a clamor for the entire series to be remastered. That if the footage for this documentary can be processed and look good enough to wet the appetite of fans, then maybe that would get the ball rolling on a full re-master/re-release of DS9 in HD. And again, that may not necessarily be a radically profound thing to see, it would be nice to get.

Shout! Studios have acquired this right to What We Left Behind and will be distributing the film globally, including a theatrical release - I'll definitely watch it in cinemas if it's shown in my country.

So it going to be one specific cinema or multiple locations? I couldn't find anything on this site or elsewhere that showed where it would be playing.
