They both suck, but 2049 had Ana de Armas so that one is vastly superior.

they are both good, but in a different way and for different reasons.
Original Blade Runner was something truly unique at that time. In the plot, the visuals, the idea of what future would be like, the music (oh the music), it brought things that were or felt new on the big screen. (not to those that read scifi but to those that dont read it may have introduced somewhat groundbreaking ideas and questions).
Blade Runner 2049 did no such thing. Nothing really groundbreaking. Nothing genre-changing. BUT - it was a very well made movie, that was more than decent sequel (how often does that happen), it was made with respect and love for the original (it shows), and with brains and creative minds behind and in front of the camera and its quite entertaining, a true feast for the eyes and a decent meal for the mind.
I think that for someone who has never read any Dick (or similar authors) and would see the BR 2049 first the original one would not have as much appeal tough. From todays perspective it seems quite outdated and also Deckart seems to have raped Rachel by todays standards.
but I still really really like the movie. both actually. but, as explained above, for different reasons.

2017(5/10) is better than the 1982(2/10 ; boring) movie, but both are ultimately a Thumbs Down.
but since the OP asked, "Which Blade Runner is better ?" ; I voted for Blade Runner 2049 even though I could have selected the 'they both suck' because while I did not feel the 2017 movie 'sucked', it was still a Thumbs Down at the end of the day.

NoraI did like Blade Runner (1982) years ago but it was on a re-watch on June 6th 2017 that I could not finish it due to boredom and turned it off @ 50min. as for when I first seen Blade Runner (1982)... I don't know exactly but I would guess likely sometime 2003+ (since that was basically the year the general volume of movies I viewed started to shoot up) which means I would have had to have been at least 23-24+ years old. either way, I know I still liked Blade Runner (1982) at some point after 2003 but prior to that June 6th 2017 re-watch it was sometime before Dec 27th 2011 the last time I re-watched it (since I been logging ALL movies I see since Dec 27th 2011). so even though both are a Thumbs Down... I can at least say that visually they are better than average but the movies just don't work for me overall. as for whether I like Sci-Fi... Yes. there are some movies in this genre within my Top 26 movies, which are... The Terminator (1984)/Source Code (2011) and some within my Top 56 movies, which are... Moon (2009)/Terminator 3 (2003)/S1m0ne (2002)/Gattaca (1997). etc. as for which I have seen first, given the above info you can tell it's... Blade Runner (1982). p.s. ill be 39 years old later this year.

The only reason fans are so wild over the first one is because Rutger Hauer kissed Harrison Ford on the mouth. Can everyone stop pretending otherwise now?

I actually really like the first one because of A) the music, B) the opening sequence with the testing - right there you KNOW this is going to be an interesting movie and C) JF Sebastian and his scenes with Priss. but guys kissing together is always good addition to any movie.

I like all the scifi movies you name as your top. Moon especially. on BR/BR2 we have a different opinion obviously. I like them both. But I have never seen the original BR on a big screen. That is something I would really like to experience. But that could probably only enhance my feelings for it .

Blade Runner (1982)
I am a big fan of existenial movies and while 2049 touches on similar themes, it doesn't do it in as interesting of a way. Another thing 2049 lacks is an interesting antagonist. That is part of what makes the original Blade Runner so unique, is that Roy Batty is the antagonist but he isn't a villain in the traditional sense. I also love the film for the film noir type storytelling.
It is a landmark in terms or visual effects, cinematography and production design, and has one of the most beautiful and haunting film scores of all time.
I love Blade Runner 2049 too though.

NoraThat's one thing I think is overrated is the 'theater experience' as while I don't mind it here and there it's not going to really make the overall experience of a movie for me any better than if I was at home. sure, being in a theater with the loud/clear sound can be cool here and there and the nice large screen is nice but overall I prefer watching movies at home in general. Yeah, but apparently I am in the minority around here on these two movies. as for the director of Blade Runner 2049 (2017), I rank his movies like this... 1.Sicario (2015) - 7/10 (within my Top 186 movies) 2.Enemy (2013-2014) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 235 movies) 3.Arrival (2016) - 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) 4.Prisoners (2013) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down) 5.Blade Runner (2049) so while Blade Runner 2049 is the worst of the five movies of his I have seen, I mostly gave Prisoners the slight edge as being both are only decent enough for a viewing I would give Prisoners the small edge. so basically I think this director is solid if given the right subject matter. p.s. the director has more movies then the five I listed above, but I have basically seen all of his movies once he hit more mainstream status.

Blade Runner 2049, but they're both masterful. The original is a landmark in sci-fi.

question for the ages. Can't decide they are both good sci fi noirs, the first one has the stronger third act, but 2049 is more balanced overall.

I actually enjoy both but give 2049 a slight edge.
Unfortunately I didn't see the original in the theater so that probably has something to do with it. I didn't see the film until several years later but I've enjoyed all the various cuts. I actually like the original cut the best as I like the narration by Ford (I know a lot of people don't).
2049 though just blew me away. I really liked Leto's lair. The lighting especially was impeccable.
