CLARE SHANNON is a teenager who will finally get what she wishes. Her dad finds a Chinese music box. No, it's not that she isn't an ambitious dreamer. The box wasn't the wish. The box is what grants the wishes. However, each time she uses it, someone close to her dies. The 1st scene (a flashback that shows how CLARE's mom died) is quite scary. I was intrigued. Then we get to the 2nd scene (in the present). CLARE goes to school and OCEAN by Rogue Wave (a kind of upbeat rock song) is playing in the background-- That's it. The movie sucks. What? Do you think it's prejudice? Look, horror movies don't have to scare the audience every minute (I'm not sure if that's even possible), but they have to keep the same atmosphere from beginning to end. A lot of movies make the mistake of only creating a horror atmosphere in the scenes where something scary will happen. Teen movies tend to do this by using music that doesn't fit. Even though THE ROOMMATE isn't the worst movie I've ever seen (or even among the worst movies I saw in 2011), it's the main example of this problem. It literally starts with FADER by The Temper Trap (also a kind of upbeat rock song), which is why it doesn't manage to establish the type of story that we're about to watch. That being said, I don't know exactly how bad this movie will be, so I'll still keep an open mind. ------------------------------------- You can read the full review in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian) and/or watch the video review:
