I just finished it and I'm speechless. This is one of the most impactful movie experiences I've ever had and it wasn't even at the cinema (I will never not be pissed at Paramount for their stupid decision). The entire movie is incredible and the atmosphere is unique. It feels like a mixture of Alien, Predator and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was thinking at least a 9/10 for the first two-thirds of the movie and then the final section takes place. I won't reveal anything, you need to experience it yourself. It literally went to a 2001: A Space Odyssey level of ambition and insanity. Simply put one of the best endings to a movie I've ever seen. I'm not sure what else I can say at this point. If you haven't seen it and you have Netflix, drop everything right now and watch it. Movies like this don't come around very often. I'd even say there hasn't been any other movie like this one. It's a 10/10 for me, with only 2 movies Alex Garland has become one of my favorite directors. And even though I think Ex Machina was fantastic, it's nothing compared to Annihilation.

I haven't seen it yet, but the praising F.A.Z. review 2 days ago did (besides 2001) mention also Tarkovsky's "Solaris" and "Stalker" as influence. Mouth Watering!

I have a couple issues with it like Gina Rodriguez’s acting, a few lines of dialogue and the guitar twang annoyed me on first viewing. But this is the type of film where the highs are so incredibly high that it overrides the nit picky flaws. I keep bouncing between a 9 and a 10. I have to see it one last time (I’ve already seen it 3 times lol) but I can see this easily becoming a 10 for me. Lighthouse sequence is easily of my favorite sequences of all time and I’ll go as far as saying that it was the most immersive experience I’ve had (last 20 min). As far as I’m concerned, I was not in a cinema for that last segment of the film.

There are a few nitpicks I have, but the highs of the movie make me forget about those moments immediately. And talking about acting, I thought Natalie Portman did an amazing job in the movie.

Yes she was excellent. I loved both her and Oscar Isaac (even if we didn’t see too much of him). I really hope Mr. Garland just sticks to making sci-fi films. After BR2049, Annihilation, and considering two of my favorite films of all time are sci fis (‘The Thing’ and ‘Alien’) I’ve pretty much confirmed for myself that science fiction is my favorite genre. All my favorite theater experiences have all been sci fi films and I just hope we see a lot more of *good* ones.

Sci-fi is also my favorite genre, probably followed by fantasy (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones). Also, earlier today I found out Denis Villeneuve is not making one, but two Dune movies in order to give it the epic translation to the big screen it deserves. He said "Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more." ( www.avclub.com/denis-villeneuve-says-hes-now-making-two-dune-movies-1823660070)

Have you read the books?

I just started reading the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series so I'll be busy with that for a while, but after that I might read Dune.

I literally haven’t read a book series since I finished those because A) I haven’t had the time like a used to and B) literally nothing will ever come close to beating those as my favorite of all time. Finished them a couple years ago and was like “whelp there’s no where to go from here but down”. ‘Dune’ is excellent as well (I’ve only read the first one though).

I'm listening to the score for Annihilation on Spotify now. I'm now at the track 'The Alien' and I need to post something about it. This track is amazing (as is the entire score). One thing I haven't mentioned yet are the end credits. Usually the end credits are just names on a screen, but Alex Garland even makes something beautiful out of that.

Oh fuck it. It’s a 10.
Lately I’ve been very careful to what I give that rating to and if I think it’s gonna be a 10 I watch it once more just to be sure. It has to be 1 of 3 things. 1) A film I can’t fault for anything. 2) Something I could watch every single day for the first of my life. 3) Something to blow me away completely
Annihilation fulfills two of the 3. It’s similar to Insterstallar and Inception. Not entirely perfect but is something that is truly special.

8.5/10 - Garland is a genius and the Southern Reach trilogy is a master work.

Just got out of the theater. Not real sure what the fuck I just watched. I'm pretty sure that I liked it, but I'm not sure how much yet.
After one viewing, I think an 8/10 is best.

I'm also trying to be very careful with ratings I give to movies, especially because it feels like I have given out many high grades lately. But when a movie like this comes around, it wouldn't feel good giving it anything less than a 10 when it's one of the most memorable and impactful movies I've seen. I was so immersed during the final part of the movie and I just watched it on a regular tv screen.

3/10
Really didn't care for it. Some creepy stuff going on, some nice moments, but it never amounted to anything. No real explanation for any of it, which I found annoying. All in all it seemed rather pointless.
