I think it is dangerous. They are taking away one of their senses. They won't be as aware of their surroundings, as things such as traffic, and bad people can much easily sneak up on them.
Don't ever do it, brahs.

It's all how people use it and how else they help themselves be safe. To be honest, in NYC. It is unsafe NOT to use them, provided you pay attention to where you are. Too many psychos out there who think they can thwack you in the head because you are 'staring' at them.

Almost weekly I take notice of people who wear huge, oversized headphones who constantly looks down at their mobilephones and then all of a sudden they have this "talent" of just throwing themselves out in the street to get to the other side of the road, without even bother to look if it is safe or clear. It is a damn miracle that not more people are harmed or worse by this kind of reckless behaviour.

As deembastile said it depends on how they use them, and how observant of their surroundings they are. If they are constantly staring down at their cellphone, excuse me "smart" phone then they are dangerous for everyone themselves and those around them.
Now if they are using them and trying to drive. Then stay the hell away from them, that is a deathtrap waiting to happen.
Oh and if they are on public transportation then I am glad they have them and are not sharing their blasting musical tastes with everyone. Most public transportation systems require headphones, or earphones for sound emitting electronic devices.

I hope they enjoy whatever they are listening to. I have no thoughts beyond that.

When I lived in Manhattan, I never wore them west of 5th Ave. I live in Queens and work in the Bronx. If I didn't have them I'd be in agony. Or worse. One insane black man on the subway wanted to murder me right there because I was there and I was white. Me having my headphones on and having a puzzle book to do is what kept me alive (in wasn't forced to listen to him and I was occupied). Headphones can be lifesavers in NYC

I never wore headphones on the subway, but didn't use the subway that often, as I lived one block away from my workplace.

As long as they don't get me killed, I'm not bothered.

As long as they don't get me killed, I'm not bothered. Well, if they do get you killed, you will not be bothered by anything ever again

On one hand, they don't disturb or bother others with their taste in music. Remeber those huge radios they used to carry on their shoulders!
On another hand, do one absolutly have to listen to music every awake hour in ones life... I was waiting in line with queue number at the hospital to get some tests taken, and one guy with huge headphones didn't hear his nummer being called, when he finally looked up his number had been passed, he got pissed, and had to get a new queue number. Those around 30 minutes of waiting to not miss your turn one ought to be able to live without listening to music.

I don't mind people wearing them in public, however I can't imagine walking with them on. Too distracting.
