A CAR log book is evidence in the John Cassavetes episode, proving that a supposedly locked up car had been driven on the night of the murder.

NalkarjOoh. A second murder never crossed my mind. I've just been thinking of our murder as the well planned first and only crime of our killer. Of course, I could very well be wrong. (I find that I'm wrong a lot.)

OldAussieThe Cassavetes episode, Etude in Black, is my favorite Columbo episode. I don't think it's the one we're looking for. I saw A FEW GOOD MEN the day it came out. It's possible that was a plot point but, except for "You can't handle the truth!", I don't remember anything about it. I should probably watch it again.

I can’t say I remember a logbook in A Few Good Men, OldAussie, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. I haven’t seen it in years. I can’t say I think that’s it, though (nor “Étude in Black,” unfortunately). More logbooks in Columbo than I’d thought! There was a car one in “Mind Over Mayhem” too. Thanks so much for the help. I checked the one with Ross Martin and Kim Hunter, and that may the bedsheets one (it’s not exactly as I remember it, but it’s not far from it), so thanks for that one too. jervistetch, as I said, I may be completely wrong about its being the second murder. It just came to mind as a possibility. I do remember the airport scene coming about halfway through the episode, and I do remember a close-up of the page in the logbook. I’m pretty sure the killer wasn’t in that scene.

Hah. I just had a brainstorm and was convinced it was an episode of "The Magician" with Bill Bixby. I rushed to read all of the episode descriptions. My brainstorm turned out to be a brain fart.

I had my own brain fart for a moment, thinking it could be Murder, She Wrote. Still looking—so many more episodes than Columbo, let alone The Magician!—but the first one to come up when I typed in “alibi airplane logbook murder she wrote” wasn’t it…

NalkarjSorry I caught this so late but, if it saves you any time, I've never seen a single episode of Murder, She Wrote.

The Love Boat was always my go-to show for that, RiP.

The more I look into this, the more I am resignedly convinced that it may not exist, that jervistetch , Lynx , several ‘Redditors,’ and I have all somehow conflated two or more Columbo episodes. I know that sounds patently absurd, but no one has been able to find this plot. It’s ridiculous.

I know that sounds patently absurd, but no one has been able to find this plot. It’s ridiculous. .....and it's funny you should bring it up.....I've spent at least 6 hours per week looking everywhere for it. There are "keywords" you can plug in at IMDb .....I've plugged in "San Francisco", Los Angeles, murder, logbook......etc. ....it comes up with pages and pages of stuff....but not what we want. I' haven't gone through all of them.....there are thousands....but one day...last week, I literally went cross-eyed going through them.
I know it's a show on the west coast...which is why we're thinking Columbo. Murder she wrote had some "travel" episodes where Jessica goes west....but not dozens. Can't remember all the episodes of MacMillan & Wife.....but I don't think so.......the other day, I also thought of Ironside....that seamed feasible.
Anyway......I haven't given up Sir....just letting you know......and I won't give up.....lol

I won't give up, either. I revisit this once or twice a week. The truth is out there!

You might be thinking...
Columbo and the Murder of a Rock Star.
Any Old Port in a Storm.
Prescription Murder.

Unfortunately, it’s none of those, @fjh, but thanks all the same. At this point I rather feel that we’ve checked every Columbo episode there is, but I still hold out hope that it may be one of the later ones or something, or even a different show… By the way, Lynx, jervistetch, thank you both for those last posts—I’m not sure we’re ever going to find it, but I keep searching (look—just like ye olde Sleuth singer!). I found one more in which a logbook and a flight are mentioned, “ Sex and the Married Detective,” but I don’t think that’s it either. (I saw part of it recently but didn’t catch the beginning or end, so I can’t be sure.)

Failing that, it's definitely not Columbo. I know every episode inside out.

Yeah, I’ve talked to a few people who have told me that it’s not a Columbo, @fjh. While I’m loath to admit it, I suppose it’s possible that we’re conflating one or more Columbos; if not, as you say, I suppose it has to be a different show (or that we all simultaneously made something up. That’s pretty much impossible). By the way, jervistetch, I noticed that “Sex and the Married Detective” has that ‘rush-back-to-event’ aspect that you remembered.

Sorry to bump this, but I’ve got Columbo on now and it came back to mind, so just in case there’s anyone who may interested but hasn’t seen this thread… You checked McMillan & Wife, right, jervistetch? Sometimes some of the Columbo writers wrote for that show too.
