Although he wasn't connected with the motion picture industry--although as a cosmetologist, he might have had a hand with British movie make-up--he was nonetheless an important figure in history. His book, "A Brief History of Time" is considered a classic.
He had been suffering for decades from that horrible, paralyzing sickness, ALS, also know as "Lou Gehrig's Disease". In fact, eventually he could only communicate by moving a cheek muscle attached to some kind of voice machine.
According to Wiki, his family has expressed their grief with the death announcement. Grief?? They should be rejoicing, as Dr. Hawking's soul is finally free from the prison of his body! Many years ago, I knew a man with Huntingson's Disease, and I saw his body slowly deteriorate. When he finally passed, I spoke with the nurse at the nursing home where he spent his last years, and we agreed that now his soul was free. Same with Stephen Hawking.

Huntington's Disease destroys the mind as well as the body. ALS does not affect the mind in any way.
Stephen Hawking had a wonderful mind and a great sense of humor. Any fans of "The Big Bang Theory" would be aware of this.
No family is going to rejoice in the loss of a loved one. Hawking was an atheist, so I am pretty sure that he didn't think of death as giving him a release from the earthly existence that trapped his body. Dead is gone, and his family is going to miss him.
Almost everyone suffering from a disease that takes away their mobility, sight, hearing, speech, etc. is hoping for a medical breakthrough that will make them normal again. I lost my ability to walk 2.5 years ago. No one knows why and the doctors, inhibited by my insurance company aren't helping. Every working of symptoms is a new challenge to be faced and conquered. Four weeks ago, I lost the use of my right thumb. Being right handed, this has been hard to adjust to. I can't even blow my nose properly, and it has been made harder by the fact I cry when I get frustrated.
I live in a nursing home now because I have no family to take care of me. At $7500 a month, staying here costs $2000 a month more than my income. I have gone through almost all of my savings with the hope someday I will get better and can go home to my house, my housemate, my cat, my TV and my film collection.
What I want and what the outcome will be is unknown, but I can tell you that I want to live, but it may not be my decision.

I'm sorry about your circumstances, neuro. But the fact that Dr. Hawking was an atheist doesn't mean that his family shared that belief.
In the last year or so of her life, my mother was severely demented, which was an enormous burden to my brother and me. When she finally died, I didn't "rejoice" (poor choice of words, I admit), but I did have a deep feeling of relief.

He can be heard on Pink Floyd's album 'The Division Bell' (1994). He enjoyed attending concerts when he had the time.
R.I.P.

He was considered one of the worlds foremost physicists. His birth.... he was born in January 13, 1932 and died on March 14 teh same day Albert Einstein was born. Unless Wiki is mistaken (which is always possible) he was born in 1942, not 1932.

I could not possibly disagree more with the comments in the third paragraph. Hawking seemed to love life and lived it to the fullest. He knew how important he was to the world of science so I am sure he wanted to stay around as long as possible. I loved your "cosmetologist" joke, though. Very funny!

An incredible mind and a wonderful sense of humour. His passing is an immense loss to the world - but we should be thankful that he overcame seemingly impossible odds to live as long as he did. What a man.

llanwyddI'm not sure it was a joke. At any rate, it wasn't funny. Stephen Hawking was not a cosmetologist, someone who specializes in hair, makeup, and beauty products. He was a physicist and cosmologist, a scientist who studies the origin and evolution of the universe. Hawking revolutionized the field of cosmology with his theory on black holes. We will not see his like again. RIP, Professor Hawking.
