Hi all - long time no see!
I have become rather smitten with this dark, dangerous siren of the silent screen and tracked down some 70 of her movies so far. Many of them are from her Post stardom period (1935-1950)
She started in 1914 or so in silents, supported John Barrymore as RAFFLES in 1917 and became a star in England in the early 20s (including the lead in TRAPPED BY THE MORMONS and a beguiling Pierette in LAUGHTER AND TEARS )and then went to Hollywood where she again achieved stardom again by 1925. She is best known for being Von Sternberg's muse before he discovered Marlene, and she was gloriously fetishised by him in feathers (UNDERWORLD) and furs (THE LAST COMMAND). Other notable movies from her star run (say 1925-1933)were LOVE EM AND LEAVE EM with Louise Brooks as sisters working in a Department store, Paramounts first talkie INTERFERENCE with Clive Brook & William Powell, the splendid BROADWAY as a gun toting showgirl, a fake medium in DARKENED ROOMS, a tropical trollop in PAGAN LADY, Alaskan epic THE SILVER HORDE opposite Joel McCrea, and THE MAD PARADE, an all female WW1 drama. She also had a fun bit in PARAMOUNT ON PARADE in an apache dance with Chevalier.Talkies revealed a rather harsh voice, which with her looks got her typed as a bad lot. The quality of her roles and films fell away fairly rapidly and by 35/36 she was heading down the cast list and appearing in B westerns. By 1937 she was taking unbilled bits as well as featured roles in some fun B movies (LAST TRAIN FROM MADRID, NIGHT CLUB SCANDAL(again in support of J Barrymore) , TIP OF GIRLS, PANAMA LADY) Her only lead of her later period was DAUGHTER OF THE TONG as "the Illustrious one" running an Oriental crime gang . Her most notable later appearance was as a devil worshipper in SEVENTH VICTIM.
Whilst many of her silent films are lost there are a few - and a couple of early talkies - that appear to have survived - Here they are - Has anyone seen them or know where to get copies.
THE DESERT OUTLAW 1924 as Buck Jones' leading lady
THE CYCLONE RIDER 1924 a featured role as "weeping Wanda" in this western
MIDNIGHT MOLLY 1925 as Molly
BROADWAY LADY 1925, as a chorus girl involved in murder
WOMEN'S WARES 1927 a romance
THE SHOWDOWN 1928 as a hooker in this Western with George Bancroft
A NIGHT OF MYSTERY 1928 a drama with Adolphe Menjou
WHY BRING THAT UP 1929 with blackface comedians Moran & Mack
MADONNA OF THE STREETS 1930 a remake of the Nazimova silent film
HOME ON THE RANGE - 1935 western with Jackie Coogan, Randolph Scott, Dean Jagger & Ann Sheridan - some say it lost.....
WITHOUT CHILDREN 1935 divorce drama as a party girl mother - billed below Marguerite Churchill !!!
and I can't not mention her last 3 silent movies that are all deemed lost - but just THINKING about them and looking at remaining stills excites Me
BEAU SABREUR 1928 - the BEAU GESTE sequel with Gary Cooper & william POwell - the trailer survives
HIS TIGER LADY 1928 leading Adolphe Menjou astray
THE DRAG NET 1928 - the missing one of the Sternberg trilogy - with G Bancroft & W Powell - as "the magpie"
