I enjoy films in this realm, whether it be those with one boarder or those with many. They can come in all styles, periods, and genres, in only part of the story, or throughout it.
A few of my favorites:
The L-Shaped Room (1962) Picnic (1955) Come Back, Little Sheba (1953) The Lodger (1944)

And they made me think of THE SHOOTIST, but you beat me to the punch listing it. That was a stellar swan song for the Duke. I don't know why I like these kind of stories so much, but I do.

An interesting thread topic and some great examples, I also really like the confined social drama of boarding house lives as in, The L Shaped Room, thanks spiderwort The Birthday Party (1968) is a brilliant British drama film directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1957 play The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter. The screenplay for the film was written by Pinter as well. The film, and the play, are considered examples of Pinter's "comedy of menace" . The film was a passion project for Friedkin, who had been a huge fan of the play, it was his second feature film. The setting is a rundown seaside Boarding House, West Sussex, England. The main protagonist is a lodger in his late 30s named Stanley, played by Robert Shaw, who has been staying at the boarding house, oneday he is visited by two unexpected additional guests, both menacing and mysterious strangers, Goldberg (Sydney Tafler) and McCann (Patrick Magee)... Stanley and landlady Meg a superb performance from Dandy Nichols

Dom na Trubnoy (1928) aka The House on Trubnaya is an excellent Soviet silent film directed by Boris Barnet. A country girl Parasha arrives in Moscow city and finds residence at the boarding house on Trubnaya Street. The highly creative social comedy is a story about the boarding house and its inhabitants...

Matewan (19870. Mary McDowell's character operates one that caters both the hero (Chris Cooper) and the villains. Found it odd how they always ate meals together despite being at gunpoint on the same day.
