I see a lot of people use photos for their avatars, so I tried uploading one from my phone, and the pic I now use is the only one under 1 megabyte. As you can see, it's very dark. Is there a way to take a good photo and have it be under 1 megabyte? I even turned off the HD option in the hopes that it would be within the limit.

Seems like you might need some software to brighten it. I went and brightened it up for you, but now it looks like it was taken with a camera phone. imgur.com/fUT9RbLYou can save it from that link above.

Thanks! I'll use that for now.
I just don't understand. I have simple pics that for some reason are over the limit, yet people have gifs as theirs that move.

You can edit photos on imgur. Like setting the dimensions to a certain width and height in pixels. You can also brighten them and do other effects. Thanks! Is that how you do it, or are you linking from a website?

This site is pretty handy. resizeimage.net/I just experiment with it and save the image file over and over until I get the desired results. I've found uploading pictures to certain websites will look darker than when they're viewed on your PC.
