huge tyson fan.
but the unthinkable happened that night.
douglas was a huge underdog. then stories came out his mom was sick (or she died - it's been so long now i forget).
true David vs. Goliath story.
remember watching Tyson stammering on the canvas trying to get up with the mouth piece hanging out of his mouth as the ref puts his arms around him trying to hold him up/console him - tremendous theater

Not in any order...
1980 Olympic hockey semifinal Douglas-Tyson NC State over Houston in 1983 NCAA title game Villanova over Georgetown, 1985 NCAA title game 1987 Fiesta Bowl, Penn State over Miami 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Boise State over Oklahoma
yeah, that more than 5. Could have added UMBC over UVA this year, the 1969 Mets, Chaminade over Virginia, Miami over Nebraska, 1984 Orange Bowl, Super Bowl III, 1960 World Series...

Flyers over the Russians in I think β75 or β76. Yeah, I remember that. Super Series '76. The Sabres flat out crushed one of the Russian teams 12-6. It wasn't CSKA, the team that the Flyers beat, but a team made up of other great players from Soviet teams that weren't Red Army.

True. I now remember it. The Flyers were thumping the Russkies around and the Soviet coach either pulled the team off the ice or refused to come out after intermission. All that did was fire up the crown even more. The Flyers fans were insane. You won't see anything like that again. On a national level, the US can't work up that much hatred for another country. Even if we played North Korea or Iran, it wouldn't reach that level. That was still the days when you had the "Duck and Cover" drills in school. Hide under the wooden desk, kiddies. that will protect you if (when) the Russians drop the big one on us.

1, Australia II wins the America's Cup in 1983 2. Newcastle have won the Grand Final. 1997 3. Adelaide Crows win on the road in a sudden death game for the 5th week in a row, overcoming a 24 point half time deficit to win the 1998 AFL premiership. 4. Liecester City winning the EPL. People who downplay this are just plain stupid. You have to play 38 games, home and away, against every other team in the league. They didn't do enough to scratch into the playoffs and then got hot. They didn't win 1 game they were unlikely to. They had to perform better than the 19 other teams over the course of an entire season. 5. Sri Lanka winning the 1996 cricket WC. Another one people play down. The bottom line is Sri Lanka won more games in that tournament than in the first 5 WCs combined. Anyone who claims that it was just a mild surprise is full of crap.
Honourable mention: India winning the 1983 WC. Another one people down play because "India beat West Indies earlier in the tournament." Yep, way earlier in the very first game. They then steamrolled through their next 6 games, including India in the return match while India lost to a poor Australian team and twice struggled agaibst Zimbabwe. By the time the final rolled around India's win against the Windies was seen as a random WTF moment, not a pointer to how the final might go.

Accrington Stanley coming from 12-0 down at half-time against Real Madrid to win 26-25.
Plus 5,000-1 shots Leicester City winning the EPL in 2016. Knocks 8/1 shots like Miracle on Ice into the shitter.

I guarantee you no bookie offered those odds. I could stretch it to 25/1 but I think that's very generous not me.

However you want to swing it a team outplaying 19 others home and away over the course of a 38 game season is a far bigger upset than any one game can possibly provide.
Ametuers beating professionals happens. Just a few years ago The Rock- Yerong Creek beat the Sydney Swans reserve team in the Canberra League Grand Final. A pub team who brings an esky full of beer to every game downed a team of professionals paid anywhere between 200k and 750k each. Swans have murdered them every game since.

Biggest upset by the odds, Rulon Gardner beating Alexandr Karelin in wrestling at the 2000 Olympics. Karelin was never been pointed let alone beat.

One chance in 18.5. c.f. 5000/1 (+500000 in Vegas odds) available on Leicester City at the start of the season.
