Best - Schindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Worst - The Terminal, Hook
To be fair, I haven't any of his films since Crystal Skull. Ready Player One also looks really uninteresting.

Overall, I'd say he's my favorite director but in all honesty has been up and down since the turn of the century. But what a 25 year run he had prior to that.
BEST: Jaws Raiders Schindler's List Empire of the Sun Jurassic Park
WORST: Hook Didn't see The Terminal, but from the looks of it, I can't imagine liking it much.

Best Close Encounters of the Third Kind Raiders of the Lost Ark Poltergeist Jurassic Park Minority Report Crystal Skull Worst ET Hook AI Crystal Skull as one of his best yet E.T. as one of his worst? That's interesting, man. Regarding Poltergeist, was Tobe Hooper really on too much cocaine to direct the movie himself?

RE Crystal Skull, I've always been fascinated by the ancient alien theory - not necessarily believe it -, so it was a thrill to see Indy explore it. As for ET, I never got into the film. I watched it twice with my mom and sister, and they were moved to tears. I was just bored. I'm in the minority though. Yes, I shouldn't have put Poltegeist up there. Officially Tobe is listed as the director, but crew and cast members said Steven ran the show. I didn't know about the cocaine thing though, wow.

I saw it as a kid in the theater and once more as a young adult. Couldn't stand it either time. Crystal Skull had some good points, but had some very bad ones too. I like the scenes in Central America (Mexico?) and the reference to Indy's time with Pancho Villa from Young Indiana Jones. But I absolutely couldn't stand the Shia scenes with the monkeys. Geez. I see where you are coming from regarding the ancient alien theory though. I watched quite a few of those old In Search of episodes with Leonard Nimoy back in the day and a lot of them focused on those theories. I believe the pilot episode narrated by Rod Serling focused exclusively on ancient astronauts. Might want to check those out if you haven't yet.

vegalyraWhile I don't rank it in my best, I've always loved this movie...bloated, over-the-top, structurally a mess....check, check, check. But it still makes me laugh and that's all it set out to do. hardballI've always thought Crystal Skull gets a bad rap as well. It wasn't quite up to par with original trilogy, but it doesn't crap all over it either. It was still entertaining as hell, and I thought Shia made a decent sidekick. It did go off the rails a little towards the end (Three drops down waterfalls? C'mon, two would have been enough and borderline overkill at that), and I thought John Hurt's character was unnecessary and an insult to the actor, but as you said there was a lot to like about it.

I'm also a bit of a 1941 fan....it's a chaotic mess, but a fun one, and has probably my favourite John Williams score. Crystal Skull is not that bad either. Winstone & Hurt are wasted, but it still has some good set pieces, and I enjoyed it a whole lot more than the first time I saw Temple Of Doom.

I agree about John Hurt in Skull. It's a hit/miss kind of film. I actually rank it a tad higher than Temple of Doom. They are all among my favorite films though (top 100). Warren Oates' character in 1941 just does it for me everytime. His lines are instantly quotable... "Let me hear your guns!!!!" "Bombers? Son, if I had bombers I'd be bombin' the hell out of them right now!" "Yes Oh, my God, does he realize how desperate my situation is here ?! They're parachuting murderers into these hills , and now I'm getting reports of secret airstrips hidden away in the alfalfa fields of Pomona!!!"

Great OP concept for Spielberg. If I had to update The American Cinema, Spielberg and Scorsese are two of only a few well-known modern directors who would make it into a Sarrisian pantheon for me (while lots of modern directors would make it into “Less than Meets the Eye” and “Strained Seriousness”!).
Best:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Temple of Doom
Schindler’s List
Catch Me if You Can
The Adventures of Tintin
Lincoln
(Jaws and Jurassic Park are both very good, but I still think they belong in the second tier rather than the first.)
Worst:
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
War of the Worlds
Still have several to see, but there’s a rough estimate.
