An off-shoot of london777 's thread about bookshops. Can you think of films set in libraries, or with library scenes? It interests me greatly, but for the moment I'm at a bit of a loss thinking of titles. These come to mind: The Music Man (1962) - Marian, the librarian, who I think actually sang in the library (such is the willing suspension of disblief) You're a Big Boy Now (1966) - an early Coppola film in which young Peter Kastner works in the NYC public library. That's it. I know there are more. I think maybe The Paper Chase (1973), but I can't remember for sure.

My go-to movie for all book-related scenes: The Ninth Gate (1999).
And the other library scene which always sticks out in my mind: The Mummy (1999).

Richard Benjamin's character in Goodbye, Columbus works at the NY Public Library (which isn't a public library, by the by). That's a movie that was big in its day but scarcely gets mention now.

After a 40 year career as a librarian and library administrator, I collected a pretty long list of librarians in movies. I don’t know what happened to my list over the last 10 years, but I do know my favorite was this clip of the Worst Librarian In The World. It is from “Sophie’s Choice.” The actor verbally abusing Meryl Streep – who is learning English and trying to find Emily Dickinson - in the NYC Public Library is John Rothman who, just two years later, played a NYCPL librarian in “Ghost Busters” and becomes a victim of Bill Murray (“Back off man. I’m a scientist”).

Der Himmel über Berlin (1987) Haven't seen this, Delon, but what an exceptionally well directed scene it is. Thanks so much. There is actually a fairly popular Hollwood remake of the film called City of Angels (1998) with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan. You might have seen it ? Needless to say that original is much better.

Gideon's Trumpet – Inmate Henry Fonda goes through the prison library's law books to look for an appeal to his conviction. (true story) Oh, I loved this, Bravo. What a wonderful story, and what a marvelous performance by Fonda. And, of course, now that you mention it, I do remember the scenes in the library quite well. Yes, it's a wonderful, small film. Made for TV? And Fonda puts in a great performance as an obstinate, uneducated man who never gives in. The Gideon case led to the right to counsel. I see that Fay Wray is in it!

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New York City. With nearly 53 million items, the New York Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States (behind the Library of Congress), and fourth largest in the world. It is a private, non-governmental, independently managed, nonprofit corporation operating with both private and public financing. The library has branches in the boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island, and affiliations with academic and professional libraries in the metropolitan area of New York State. The City of New York's other two boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens, are served by the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Library, respectively. The branch libraries are open to the general public and consist of circulating libraries. The New York Public Library also has four research libraries which are also open to the general public. It is privately-owned but open to the public. It gets some government funding but also a good deal from private sources.
