Is it still good does it hold up after all this time? Is it a camp classic? I don't like most horror, so I can't comment too much. But I don't think it's worth seeing though. Is it a scary film or comedy? I could never tell.

Is it a scary film or comedy? I could never tell. 1. Is it still a good movie? I think for some people it is. In my opinion, it's a good film, if not a bit overrated. It's become a much more popular film than I feel it deserves. 2. Does it hold up? Man, I don't think it ever held up. It doesn't belong to any particular time. It was weird when it came out, and it's weird now. I think its weirdness is why it is so appealing. 3. Is it a camp classic? I don't know about that, but it is definitely a cult classic. 4. Is it scary or a comedy? It's both. It starts out being (or sttempting to be) scary. But when the filmmakers assembled the film around halfway through filming, they realized that the film was more funny than scary. So then they start pushing the humor more towards the end. I do like horror, so I can say. It's a good film, and it definitely is worth viewing for fans of horror. But no, it can't explain why it has the popularity outside the genre that it does.

It holds up pretty well considering it was directed by a 20 year old on a micro-budget. I still much prefer Evil Dead II, though.

It still holds up quite well, and it has the solid cult following to prove it. It's good, gruesome fun. The one drawback is the obvious cartoonish stop-motion visual effects towards the end.

I don't recall any intentional comedy in The Evil Dead at all. It's a straight up horror film. Maybe thee cheesy outdated effects make it feel more comedic. It was with Evil Dead 2 where they brought in the comedy.

It's actually my favorite out of the three films, heck I even think Ash vs The Evil Dead is the second best of this franchise. I appreciate that it has a tinge more horror than it does slapstick, perhaps an unpopular opinion, but that's mine

1. Still great, and still holds up pretty well, despite being early 80's.
2. Yes, a classic that is super campy.
3. It's mainly scary. The sequels are more comedy, but I liked the second film better. This one is still a good watch, though.

Evil Dead I has its moments, but it was shot on a shoestring, and Bruce Campbell is not at his best--Evil Dead II is far superior, and Army Of Darkness is even better, both movies show Bruce Campbell as one of the funniest and talented actors around

I personally regard it as the single greatest horror film of the 1980s. And make no mistake about it - this is a very 80s film. It's extremely violent and gory, but has an ever-so-subtle camp quality to it as well. It's very much a horror flick, however, unlike the 1987 sequel.
I'd strongly recommend it for anyone interested in exploring classic (as in 1970s/1980s) horror.

It was with Evil Dead 2 where they brought in the comedy. I don't recall exactly what my source was. It could have been Bruce Campbell's autobiography, as I do remember reading about how they had to shut down filming for a period while they scraped up funds to finish it. But nevertheless, I do see a pretty clear moment where the deadites go from being a kind of heartfelt creepy that happens to come across as funny to a kind of funny that has its roots in creepy. I think my reading of this moment is supported by the fact that the filmmakers never return to the creepy vibe established in the first half of the first film. It's always comedy through creepiness, never just creepy. And I'm talking about part 2 and 3 as well. The filmmakers surely must have realized that their creepy horror film was actually a comedy, and just wentt with it in order to not lose their investment. For part 2, they decided to remake it in full as a comedy.
