Signs got fairly good reviews when it came out and now, after audiences and critics turned on Shyamalan after The Village and The Happening, is mocked relentlessly for plot flaws. I still think it’s superb—with the original Body Snatchers, it’s probably my favorite alien invasion flick, but it’s so different from the rest of the genre that it may not even warrant a spot here.

Would The Thing (1982) count? It is one alien but still means end of humanity if reaching a populated area.

I second John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) and "They Live" (1988).
I would add "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) and "The Andromeda Strain" (1971). Coincidentally, both had remakes in 2008 and both were supposed to be terrible. IMO, the only good thing about the "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake was it prompted a two-disc special edition DVD of the original. I can't comment on "The Andromeda Strain" remake because I didn't see it.

"John Carpenter's THE THING" is My own Number 1 Favorite Movie out of All of My Favorite Movies!
I have watched it so many times over the years that I actually now know the movie line for line.

War of the Worlds (2005) ; 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 105 movies)
that's the movie that comes to mind. I doubt I got anything placed higher than that.

When "Signs" came out in theaters I was blown away, you felt for Mel Gibson's character, a man who lost his faith and was filled with resentment. And regarding the "it all has a meaning" ending.... while it wasn't perfect I think it worked quite well.
