Mental illness in this case includes people who are certifiably insane, ill but not diagnosed, on the edge of madness, or those who have a breakdown with behaviors that damage their lives and the lives of those around them. I know this can be a bit subjective, so explanations would be helpful in some cases. With that broad net, I'll start with these, which I greatly admire (not sure it's possible to "like" these films). A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) - an emotionally unstable Blanche DuBois fights to preserve her sanity in the face of her brother-in-law's brutality Lust for Life (1956) - Van Gogh's madness drives him to create some of the world's great works of art One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1974) - crazy people in an asylum struggle for normalcy despite the torments of Nurse Ratchett A Woman Under the Influence (1974) - a woman's mental breakdown wreaks devastation on her family An Angel at My Table (1990) - writer Janet Frame's life story, from childhood to her times in mental institutions, to winning numerous literary awards

David and Lisa (1962) is another good one. Both this and Lilith are in my top 25 movies of the 1960s.

Lilith (1964) is a good one. Really underrated movie too. Oh, yes, an excellent choice. Haven't seen it in a long time, but there were many things about it that I admired. Jean Seberg was outstanding, I thought, and I loved the way Beatty the therapist was drawn into her madness. There were also some exceptional cinematic elements in it, particularly long dissolves that at times became almost superimpositions. And if memory serves, this is the film where Beatty met Hackman and later helped Arthur Penn cast him in Bonnie and Clyde. I'd really like to see this one again. Peter Fonda was good too, as I recall. Your memory serves you well!

The Snake Pit is not a bad one, especially for its time (1948).

How about Apocalypse Now? It has a very powerful scene in which Kurtz specifies the moment he went mad – seeing the pile of hacked-off arms then being hit by a diamond bullet that enabled him to see genius in atrocity.

Adding THE 1958 Mervyn LeRoy film HOME BEFORE DARK -- maybe Jean Simmons' finest performance.

Balkanski Špijun / Balkan Spy (1984) This is more of a black comedy/satire, but I guess it qualifies for this thread. It is about a paranoia driven reformed Stalinist masterfully played by Bata Stojković who grows to believe his tenant is an imperialist spy.
Leave Her to Heaven (1945)
Gene Tierney's stark portrayal of mental illness earned her an Oscar nomination.

Christine (2016), one of the most tragic portrayals I've seen. Perhaps Rebecca Hall's best performance.

Jessica Lange (top) as Frances Farmer (bottom) in Frances (1982), such an epic performance from Lange.

THE THIRD SECRET with Stephen Boyd. Very interesting murder mystery story as he is a tv reporter who goes to pieces after his therapist is reported dead from suicide. He has a hard time coping as he investigates because he concludes if he therapist couldnt hack it, how can he? Pamela Franklin has amazing presence in this. Hard to think of her as adolescent given how intense she is.
