This year is the 35th anniversary of the release of First Blood. What is your favorite Rambo movie? Anyone read the novel/novelizations? Comments or thoughts on the titles of the series being such a mess and what you would suggest them being renamed? Should there be a Rambo 5?

Haven't seen the 4th one so could only judge 3. By a whisker I gave it to 'Rambo - First Blood pt2'.

First Blood. I like all of them, they're a part of my childhood. And I think part 4 is a close second

It's a toss up between First Blood and Rambo (the most recent movie). I gave it to Rambo since it looks like it can use some help....

Although First Blood is by far the best movie overall. I have a soft spot for Part II. It's just the one that started the Rambo Phenomenon for me.

Yes, I agree. The fanfare for that film was amazing. Based on pure entertainment, it may be my favorite of the franchise. Stallone really found a perfect balance for the action narrative in that film's editing.
Anyhow, as for retitling the series, I don't have any real preferences, but here are some suggestions I like:
Rambo: First Blood
Rambo II: The Mission
Rambo III: Full Circle
Rambo IV: Home Coming
straight forward, all numbered with subtitles that make sense and with terms that are military or even Vietnam specific.
An alternative using the original First Blood title throughout the series:
First Blood
First Blood II: The Vendetta
First Blood III: Holy War
First Blood IV: The Return
Anyhow, on a side note, I've read all of the Rambo books by David Morell. I recommend them all, esp. the first 2. James Cameron's original First Blood II: The Mission script is also an excellent read.

The original is more intense but part two was always more entertaining.

......damn you. First Blood is a somber Vietnam solider reiteration of Frankenstein's Monster.......but Rambo.......has this scene

artistically it must be First Blood, but i got a soft spot for the last one (Rambo) which is so bloody bad, it's bloody fun again. All in betwen is trash.

First Blood by a very wide margin. The rest are borderline (or actual) shite

The top three are all great. The fourth one was pathetic. Just a rehash of the Parts 2 and 3 with more gore and violence added.

Although I liked it, I like hearing from those who didn't b/c I do agree that it was not only a rehash of the rescue plot, but it did go against what the previous movies had been about: updating the Western. Rambo IV seemed to want to be more like Apocalypto than the other movies and it really wasn't about Rambo but about Burma. Any character could have been in the lead role it seems. Still, I thought it was terrific, but has little replay value b/c it does not have the fun suspense of the others, but a real dread.

I understand if you liked Rambo IV for the reasons you mentioned. Of course we all have different tastes. But I really hated it, and this coming from someone who has been a lifelong fan of Stallone! I like even many of his bad movies like "Stop! Or my Mum Will Shoot" and "Judge Dredd". My gripe with Rambo IV is that it was an unnecessary film. Only if there had been a new story to tell, then they should have made it. There was no point in making it if you are just going to rehash the previous movie. I think it started with "Rocky Balboa" (Rocky VI). Stallone, and all of his fans were very upset with the way the Rocky series ended on the rather terribly made Rocky V. So to fix that he made Rocky VI. I think he did a very good job with the sixth one. I didn't like the reality tv type fights, but the story was quite endearing. He didn't just remake Rocky V, but a completely different film. With the success of Rocky VI, Stallone probably though that he should go back and "fix" the Rambo franchise too. The problem here is that while most of the people hated Rocky V, a lot of people really enjoyed Rambo 3. Sure it had more humor and its fair set of flaws, but it was entertaining to Rambo fans. BUt because critics gave it a thumbs down, Sly wanted to make another Rambo movie to properly end the franchise - enter Rambo IV - a remake of Rambo III stripped of all humor and entertainment. If Sly had given the movie's story some thought and actually made a different movie, I would have been in. But it was a very lazy attempt, in my opinion.

If Sly had given the movie's story some thought and actually made a different movie, I would have been in. But it was a very lazy attempt, in my opinion. It was a bit of a rehash, but it was done differently: more serious, violence that has consequences and with more co-stars rather than focusing on Rambo so much. I get the feeling Cameron's First Blood II: The Mission script may have been an inspiration. It's clearly been an influence and is the basis, albeit with substantial rewrites, for Rambo II - IV. There is a snippet of an interview on a James Cameron fan site in the Rambo: First Blood Part II section, and Cameron states Stallone casually mentioned to him that in a way he wished they had filmed his script b/c they ending up throwing out the 1st half. I think this was something of an updating of it. It also added more character conflict present in the original novel that was not shown in First Blood. His struggle with religion is perhaps taken from the Rambo II & III novelizations. For those who haven't read it, Rambo is quite the smart ass in the novel First Blood, especially in the beginning. It was Sly who decided to make Rambo silent as they originally wrote and even filmed some of it with his cracking wise (one line that remains is the "don't look at me look at the road, that's how accidents happen." On the commentary, Sly regrets leaving that line in.)
Rambo IV showed that, albeit very bitterly, in the beginning. In that respect, Rambo III is actually very faithful to the character in regards to humor. For example the scene in First Blood where Rambo shoots at the National Guard at the cave entrance before they fire a rocket at him, in the book he actually has some sarcastic banter for the Guardsman.

I think Paradise Alley is my favorite "bad" Stallone film. Though I didn't find it bad really.

Gotta be First Blood, but I've always been partial to Cobra over the Rambos...

First Blood was a gritty, mature themed, movie with violence that had real world consequences. The sequels were pure action popcorn movies. That's not to say they are bad but the first one is certainly superior.
A very similar thing happened with the movie "Death Wish" and it's sequels.
