It seems to be a problem that is not uncommon across several brands and models, even when playing brand-new discs. If you own a reliable Blu-ray player, please recommend.

I have a Sony Blu-ray and I don't recall it ever freezing up.

I use my PS3 for Blu Rays and it's never had an issue playing Blu Rays . I also have a Toshiba player that used to have those types of issues until I upgraded the firmware. That may be all you need to do with your player.
That being said, I'll only buy Sony players going forward if I ever need another one....

I bought a Sony a few years back...
It has one problem. If I watch a movie, and I want to watch another movie after that, and I switch discs, the player acts like there is not a new disc in the machine. I have to turn it off with the power button, and back on again. Then it works like it should. It's annoying, but not critical.

I own a Panasonic Blu Ray that is attached to a Panasonic 48 inch plasma widescreen hi def TV. I have never had any problem. I maintain that the DVD playback system should be compatible with the output device. Hence, my remotes for both systems are identical and therefore in sync with the connection.

I've owned 4 blu-ray players since 2010.
1. Jan 2010 - My first one by Sony was crap. If i played anything that was burned, If It was sony brand DVD-R, it would skip like the disc was scratched (DVD Minus R sony brand only). Plus 720P on component looked clearer than 1080P on HDMI and it wasn't the cords, it was the player
2. Dec. 2010 - I got an Insignia one at best buy because i wanted one that did Netflix streaming. This one was great. It just had one issue - some times, Any DVD+R disc (of any brand) would make weird sounds as it played. if i didn't want one that did amazon prime, i would have kept it
3. April 2012 - I got a Vizio Brand because i wanted one that also did Amazon prime streaming. THIS WAS THE WORST. it would always freeze at start up. At times, i had to keep reloading the disc just to get it to play.
If i kept anything on pause that wasn't a dvd disc (Amazon stream, netflix stream, bluray disc) longer than 5 minutes, I had to unplug the player and restart it. then sometimes it wouldn't come on when i restarted so I would have to unplug 2 or 3 times before getting it to work
I assumed because the vizio TV I had was great, the bluray player would be too. WRONG
4. My current blu-ray is a sony and i have no issues. Well I might. I had to ship it from Washington state to pennsylvania, where i moved, and i don't have a flat screen tv to to hook it up to just yet. So IDK if it's been damaged in the move, but if it has, it's not sony's fault.

I have to turn it off with the power button, and back on again. Then it works like it should. It's annoying, but not critical. My guess is a firmware update will likely fix that. check Sony's website for a firmware update for your particular model. assuming that Sony player has a USB port it should be a easy to upgrade the firmware as long as you got a decent sized USB thumb drive. p.s. the Samsung Bluray player we have (i.e. Samsung J5700 series) seems to release firmware updates somewhat regularly with the newest being Nov 1st 2017 (before that was Aug 10th 2017). but speaking of this bluray player... i am surprised it plays HD video from .mkv files from a USB thumb drive. the 64GB thumb drive we got defaults to exFAT file system which the Samsung bluray player does not even see that the drive is connected when that file system is used but you can put it into your computer and format it to NTFS and it's recognized and works well after that in the Samsung bluray player. i am just surprised they make it nice and easy to play those files ; not that it matters as i generally use my PC connected to the HDTV through the HDMI port to play back basically all of my movies anyways but i do fire up that Samsung bluray player and use that from time to time.
