1. They had FACES!!!! 2. Visual metaphors (esp. for sexual climaxes and other fun stuff--close-ups of uncurling fists, shattering wineglasses, flowers drooping and dropping their petals, etc.)

 Nosferatu vs. just about any modern vampire film. Horror in general was very creepy during the silent era.
