ANOTHER @#$%in' CLIFFHANGER??
This seems so awful, yet I can believe it's possible with this show.... Those who have read or even know about the comics know what happens to Negan at the end of All Out War. Rick slits his throat, but he is somehow saved and kept in the jail cell into the future. (BTW, how can you possibly save someone with a slit throat? Unless Rick was totally incompetent and did not hit the main artery or vein).
Now we have seen this "flash forward" of a wounded, bleeding Rick sitting under a tree. Here's my "Gimple" idea....In the season finale, both men will appear to be mortally wounded, but not shown to die. Then everyone will have to wait until S9 to see who, if either of them died. Infuriating fans who wanted resolution to this story arc this season! THEN when season 9 returns, after a few years time-skip, they will not show or talk about Rick or Negan for 4 or 5 episodes, but use flash backs to show what happened.
Hell, throw Maggie in there too, since we don't know if she will be back. Have her fall off the wall so we wont know if she and the still invisible baby will live.
Yes, these are all horrible ideas, but I can really see this show pulling some shit like this!!

Didn't the last cliffhanger backfire badly by crumbling down the rating dramatically (good rating for the initial episode, but then it goes only downhill)...I've stopped watching this show because of Negan and the repitition of the two main tropes: Either Rick's group encounters a group with A) an increase in the state of neglect like Terminus, Wolves and soon the Whisperers, or deal with individuals who show B) an increase in their nature as functional psychopaths who are terrorizing their own and other communities ( => Governour, the hospital, Negan). ABABAB....the same two principles only more extreme. And always new people because the old one got killed instead developed. As if the killing of an older character would mean anything if it has become a standard procedure or element of the show. If Carl really dies, there is maybe Morgan, Daryl and Carol as the only "first one" left, and Morgan was for a long time no part of the show, nor a member of Rick's group. But from the first actual group we have only Carol and Daryl left.

But from the first actual group we have only Carol and Daryl left. Yes, it backfired in the S6/S7 "Who Got Lucilled?" cliffhangar, but mostly because the way it was done and what followed. They already did it again this season MSF with Carl getting bit. Cliffhangars have been used forever in many shows, to build interest for the next show or season. But I think TWD fans that are still left want resolution for a change. People are sick of the same repeating formulas you spoke of. It was Ok for a while. We already know the Whisperers are next, and while it may be a good story, it follows the same "lather, rinse, repeat" formula. Season 7 premiere was the peak of the show's ratings and popularity, drawing in a lot a casual viewers. Many were turned off by the violence. Long-time viewers have seen much more violent and gory scenes. I guess the fact that is was being done to beloved characters made it painful to watch. I certainly did not want to see the show tone done the violence and gore, it's always been part of the show. What I hated was the immediate downslide in the show quality afterwards. Boring bottle episodes with no real character development, worse and worse writing, poor pacing, stupid plot evolution, and the overall bummer feel of S7. So overall, Im not against the cliffhangar device,(It was done well at the end of S4; that one made me excited for S5). But this show has abused it. It became ghoulish to wait for months for a show to come back just to see who dies.
