So these are what I assume to be the big powerhouses of horror from this decade (at least from what I hear other poeple say):
The Exorcist The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Jaws The Omen Carrie Halloween Alien
The way I'd rank them is this (from favourite to least favourite):
Halloween The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Alien Carrie Jaws The Exorcist The Omen

1. Alien 2. Halloween 3. Carrie 4. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 5. The Omen 6. Jaws 7. The Exorcist
I'm with Dramatic Look Gopher on the need to include Black Christmas, Suspiria and The Wicker Man.
Might I also suggest Romero's Dawn of the Dead and Fulci's Zombi 2.

Jaws The Exorcist Carrie Alien Halloween The Omen
(I've never seen The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The Omen needs a rewatch as I haven't seen it in many years.)

Many of these films I have not seen for a very long time, not that I do not like them or anything like that but no matter how much of a classic they may be, very few of them have that "re-watchable" magic to them (or so I think). However, I would probably rate/rank them in this way:
Alien - 9,5/10 Jaws - 9/10 Halloween - 7/10
The rest I have not seen for many years and I notice I have not rated them since I had to start up a new (my recent for the last 7 years and counting) IMDb profile back in summer of 2011. But from my memory I do not think any of them was stronger than a 7/10 but of course that might all change with time:
The Exorcist The Texas Chain Saw Massacre The Omen Carrie

JAWS ALIEN The Exorcist The Omen Halloween Carrie The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - Never saw it I'd recommend it a ton, especially if you like gritty horror movies from the 70's.

Might I also suggest Romero's Dawn of the Dead and Fulci's Zombi 2. Yes. I believe those are also classics, but the only one I actually seen from those is Black Christmas, and as great of a film it is, I can't for sure say it's a horror "powerhouse". It's mainly obscure from what I see.

Jaws The Exorcist Carrie Alien Halloween The Omen (I've never seen The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The Omen needs a rewatch as I haven't seen it in many years.) TCSM is a horror classic, so do check it out. I also need to give The Omen a rewatch since I need to have it clearer in my mind.

Many, many of these I have yet to see, but then I’m not that much into “horror,” per se. Anyhoo…
Alien—brilliantly filmed, excellent suspense, superb lead performance from Sigourney Weaver. Great picture all-round.
Halloween—the only thing Carpenter ever did with any lasting value, I think. Myers implied to be supernatural? Jamie Lee Curtis very good, Donald Pleasance goofily hammy. Fine Hitchcockian suspense.
Jaws—excellent early Spielberg, slightly marred by the fact that two wildly discordant halves (one horror, the other adventure) don’t quite fit together.
The Omen—Gregory Peck lends gravitas, but ultimately I just found this silly.

Great picture all-round. Agreed. I'm starting to love it even more the more I think about it. It's like if you take Halloween but set it on a spaceship. Speaking of which... It's Donald Pleasance, actually. But yeah, this is my favourite horror film. Suspense at its finest.I'm fine with the adventure-horror mix. Besides, this is Spielberg. There is gonna be some adventurous tones in some place. What was so silly about it?

James Ah, mea maxima culpa! I always have a problem with writing the Donalds’ last names… I’ve written at length about my issues with Jaws’ tone, but suffice it to say that I don’t dislike the adventurous side; to the contrary, I’m probably more preferential to adventure than to horror. I think the tonal whiplash between the two acts is too sudden and jarring, though—they feel like two separate movies. As for The Omen, I think my pronouncement of “silliness” refers to the picture’s including all the trappings: the dogs, the nanny, the 666 symbol. Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, of which I’m not completely fond either, convinces us of the Antichrist because it sets everything in a recognizably real world in which characters doubt such things. The Omen gives us everything—and, thereby, fails to convince the viewer (or, at least, this viewer) of its reality. EDIT: Found what I wrote before about Jaws. imdb2.freeforums.net/post/259219/thread
