"The Killing Moon" synth pop? Siouxsie and the Banshees "Cities In Dust" synthpop???
Folks, what the hell is happening on this thread? Don't people understand musical genres? Are we going to see on a reggae thread The Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"?

Sorry if the song I posted doesn’t belong in this thread. I’ll freely admit that I’m not great with recognizing what genres of music certain songs fall into, but I did check the Wikipedia page for ‘Heads Will Roll’ by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and under ‘Genre’ it had ‘synthpop, alternative dance, new wave, dance-punk’ – so I just assumed that was correct (though I have heard you can’t 100% trust Wikipedia).

Don't die thread, don't die... I hope its ok, to bring this one back, as I was kind of surprised it has gone almost 4 years, and it would be nice to have somwhere to post and discuss synthpop/electronic music. Anyway, I have been browsing around on Youtube for a while these last days, picking up a few ones, that I was so sure I had posted here earlier, but I guess not. One of those acts, were the very early pre-version of The Human League, who went under the name of The Future (I think also The Men), and where I really have become quite interested in their early and more experimental stuff, that ended up on a CD compilation titled: The Golden Hour of the Future (2002), and sadly, that one seems a little too pricy for me, at least as of right now. Still, most of the album is uploaded, and I really enjoy a few of these fan made music videos, where someone has combined all kind of old Retrofuturism clips, from either sci-fi movies or tv-shows, along with the Future and their very cold and yet kind of upbeat (at times) futuristic and minimalistic beats. Dancevision (1977)4JG (1977)Year of the Jet Packs (1977)There is something quite deliciously "innocent" and fresh sounding, about a few of these cuts, and they were surely a very long shot away of what The Human League would sound like, only a few years later on. I kind of wished they would continue on a bit further with what they had going on during their first two studio albums, but of course, then we might not have gotten the classics that were soon to be Dare (1981), Penthouse & Pavement (1981) and The Luxery Gap (1983).

Speaking about synthpop and Retrofuturism. As a kid, I used to love looking through all of these beautiful sci-fi magazines, which contained huge posters and images of a future, which had already "been", or at least one which gave some insight of how people during the 1950s and 60s, envisioned or dreamed of how the future might look like, beyond the year of 2000: Anyway, I guess looking out the window right now, and it is kind of hard, not to think "Bummer, where the hell did this cool and exciting looking future go?" and well, the closest to kind of re-capturing the same dreamy feel and hopes of similar futuristic city landscape, one can dig out a few of the Ratchet and Clank video games, but I do still prefer from time to time, to play through a few of Gary Numan and his earliest albums, then go back and read and search out all these beautiful and adventurous retro images, and they still give me that chilling and sweet naive childhood sensation, but I guess the days when The Jetsons were seen as the "future" is not gonna happen. Sure, as I got older, and finally discovered the world of Blade Runner, I sure did fell deeply in love with the more bleak, depressing, yet kind of romantic retro-future, which that film came so heavy with. Of course, it helped having female androids like Rachel looking quite lovely, as well as the stunning Vangelis score, still not so sure I would enjoy living in that kind of world, though. Well, what I guess I was trying to say is, here are a few of those synthpop/electronic tunes, which at least I think somehow manages to capture some of that atmospheric and naive/dreamy yet also kind of chilling/scary look back, at a future that never happened: Tubeway Army - When the Machines Rock (1979)Gary Numan - Engineers (1979)John Foxx - 030 (1980)Devo - Planet Earth (1980)The Buggles - Astroboy And The Proles On Parade (1980)Thomas Dolby - Airwaves (1982)
